Back in chapter 2 fern looked to be around 8 or 9, since this chapter takes place 9 years after that she's probably somewhere between 16-18. She just got stuck taking the mother-like role early because frieren acts like a literal child half the time

Edit: in chapter 4 fern turns 16 and that's ~2 years before this one so she's either 17 or 18
