Esmerelda and Elise are pretty crucial to later parts of the light novels. I guess the anime isn't expecting to get there so dropping their importance now makes sense but it's sad.

Episode 2 felt a little rushed imo. Especially since they changed Esmerelda giving Mia the Cold Sweets to her just buying them. Honestly, changes how her character should be, oh, and cuts out the bit of Mia thinking badly of Esmerelda. Which comes up later in the series. (Anime won't get there though)

Esmeralda's role in the story comes much later than even where the manga currently is, so I can understand why the anime decided to cut her out. But I'm still sad we didn't get to see Mia's salty face when thinking of her!

Anime often does that even if it does expect to get that far. The story in anime is, at least in my experience, much more "in the now" than manga or LNs. In cases like these, characters are introduced when they become important, not when they would logically enter the story.
