Others have already mentioned that the nobles who gave them the food did it bc they thought Mao Mao was there to sexually entertain him....which if that's the case they must've either been really excited to see him finally interested in a woman, or they have a lot of faith in Jinshi's vigor, 'cause if a sip of wine took Basen out that quickly i don't think Jinshi would've faired much better
As of this chapter, Jinshi holds the position of "That Honorable Guest," which refers to the Emperor's younger brother. During the Chinese Empire, it was common for the Emperor to be served food that boosted his energy and sex drive regularly since producing offspring was one of his duties. This practice also extended to other royals, such as Jinshi, although not as frequently. The host might assume that Jinshi can take these foods just fine, like it's a Viagra for "tonight" rather than for "the first time."

Uh, yeah... I know all that lol. I was making a little joke that they probably made it extra potent bc they were excited, since it's not often Jinshi sleeps with women (seeing as he's disguising as an eunuch), not that it was his first time.

Thank you so much for the translation! Fantastic job as always 😙👌✨

Ouch, all the men in that room felt Maomao’s story huh 🙃😂😖 Ouch! And dang, Maomao’s Poison Powerhouse resistance is to be feared and admired 😂

This line in particular makes me laugh because other than Gao Shun, everyone in that room is about 2-3 years from each other in age 😆 Doesn’t feel too far though to modern behaviors/mindsets of their age range though x)
IF I’m remembering correctly…
Jinshi’s really about 17 years old; Maomao’s about 16; and Basen I’m not too certain of but I’d say 15 /16 as well? Also, Consort Gyokuyou is about 19 y/o.

Feel free to confirm or correct me, if I’m wrong 😄🙂
Well, ur pretty close but Maomao is actually 18, and Jinshi- 19 at the moment. Our lovely poison tester got to harem when she was 17, and it was already a year and a half since that happend. And when !SPOILER ALERT! we read about his highness, it is always said that he is 19.

because of his real identity
Emperor's little brother/emperor's first child (hinted in story)
wait, this part confused me. Jinshi thinks that the emperor is his brother but initially thought that he was the son. im confused since dethroning consort Aduo chapter, it was hinted that Jinshi might be the emperor's son.

It was implied from Aaduo arc that there could've been potentially a swap between Aaduo's son and late emperor's son, but Mao mao shrugged it off because it's inconvenient for her to think that way. However, a few chapters back Empress Dowager did hint something about the swap in her thoughts, implying either she doesn't care about how people think of her child with emperor, or the child was genuine and she had to swap it with Aaduo's to protect it, though it's quite unclear which case was it so we still stuck Jinshi being both. There's an interesting theory that the swap was real and the one initiated it isn't any of the consorts but Ruo Men (Mao Mao's adoptive father) himself, though it's really stretched and lacking evidence

Not exactly. It wasn't told exactly who did the swap, but it definitely wasn't Ruo Men, as he was punished so severely for death of emperor's brother after the swap not only because he let it happen, but also because he did not notice the swap in the first place.

If I am not wrong jinshi is Consort Aduo's son, she realizes that her son might not make it until adulthood because she is still a prince consort, which makes her change emperor's (now) brother with her son (jinshi), u can see empress is agreed to it bc she doesn't like the emperor's (previous one) son at all but she likes it when hugging jinshi. Ruo Men get punished because of this case. he knows that he is the emperor's (now) son (u will see the explanation later in the far future)

Ruo Men already become eunuch because of the empress if I am not wrong, and eunuch is the lowest standing in the palace, Jinshi's case is about an heir so it is really bad for the lowest standing eunuch to not recognize the difference (he is the most skillful inner palace doctor in his time I think), but I read the novel long time ago, so I don't know if this is the correct answer

What is confusing here is why they would send Jinshi a bunch of aphrodisiacs since he is posing as a eunuch.
It isn't like Mao Mao is the only one who doesn't know he isn't.

So far as I can tell, Jinshi is probably masquerading as a eunuch and chemically subduing himself because he probably has the same urges as the previous emperor. i.e. He is basically a paedophile... and he knows that is wrong, so he is playing the eunuch part as a form of self-control. But Mao Mao represents a bit of a dilemma here since she has no secondary sexual characteristics. She is essentially a lolibaba... which is prime paedobait. Jinshi is conflicted because this girl is both legal AND within his strike zone.

... BUT that is just my take on things.

Jinshi is indeed Aaduo's son. Anshi (the queen mother) agreed to the swap since she had no attachment to her second son with the previous emperor. After the swap, the Imperial Brother was the one who Fengming inadvertantly killed with honey. The confusing bit is that Jinshi himself believes himself to be the Imperial Brother.

If I remember correctly,
Rou Men got punishment because he failed to prevent Current Emperor's son/brother's death. It was only after Rou Men was banished that Current Emperor know about the switch. Since words already goes out that Current Emperor's son died, they just decided to raise Jinshi as Imperial Brother.

Probably because he was raised as Imperial Brother. He did wondering what might happen if the son is live and thought Current Emperor is his father before, but I think Jinshi himself still don't know about the switch.

This chapter was so funny and also shows how much Mao Mao trust in Jinshi and actually believes he's an eunuch. She wouldn't insist Jinshi to eat the food if she wouldn't be aware that he isn't an eunuch and nothing would happen if he eats an aphrodisiac since it wouldn't cause a vital desire on him.
