If he is so insistent on the “old-fashioned” one man army concept, he should have begged and groveled at Elma to return the moment the girl he chose as successor was beaten by Elma. (Not that Elma should accept)
Or, properly have successor candidates duke it out instead of just choosing based on their affinities and perception. That way the truly strong gets to uphold the one man army approach.

So in the end, he really is just a muscle-brained idiot who cannot uphold his supposed “values”.

Though tbf, if he wasn’t an idiot we wouldn’t get the series and Elma wouldn’t get his adventure, so at least he serves his role.
