Me too... I have a feeling that he'll end up in a situation where his intervention with backfire on him horribly or maybe his followers slowly develops into a cult and he ends up in a bad situation.

There is no concrete evidence of it being the case, but I think that things making more sense if it is the case, and with no confirmation that it isn't (since the mental gymnastics or other dismissals he might offer would be covered by his subconscious desire to convince himself it isn't real to avoid guilt), there is no obstacle to reading it with that idea in mind. I don't claim that was what the author was going for (though I wish it were, and if it were, it might have been nice to drop more hints or outright indicate it), but I think it a plausible enough excuse to aid in suspension of disbelief for what is occurring. Otherwise it is a glaring plot hole that disrupts the flow of the rest of things (which is one reason I came up with a theory to try to explain it, for my own reading enjoyment).
