That's why this story is so good. Outside of a few truly evil people (black tower mages) all of the other villains are morally gray, pushed into terrible acts by the horrible things they've experienced. Even the first princess was a morally ambiguous character who was irreprehensible, but you can see the motivations behind those actions and feel bad for them.

That's why this story is so good.
