I am reading the book and tears keep coming. The story is so sad and good. It will take some time to turn ch 8 to 12 into manga.

he had very little choice in the matter, you think the people would have let him keep her at his home or something? he might have been a leader through the revolution, but that's only because he is doing what the people want. some people didn't like him and tried to assassinate him over the years even. all he could do was try make her tell the truth and save her life the only way he knew, which is why sending her to the monastery. she refused and chose to be publicly executed by confessing to her "sins". think of most revolutions where the leader is overthrown, and think of how many families of former kings survive that.

ik that but I'm looking at it at the point of love... He never really loved her so (He brutally murdered his love in front of a raging crowd)

@GruntZone360 i think you are wrong there too, to me to looks like his heart ached as she refused his help. she even made a scene at the day of the execution so he had no choice but to hurry it up. Just look at his face chapter 3 when she makes a face similar to the one she gave him before dying. also his whole speech about "i need everyone in my fief to be happy, otherwise there is no meaning to me becoming the lord" can be taken as, having her executed was weighing on him heavily, and the only way he can live with him self if even a little, is by working himself nonstop to ensure that at least the people he sacrificed his love for are living well.

@higher87 I agree with @GruntZone360
The guy is fucked up. Yes, he was very justified in bringing down the current, corrupt lord. However, there's so much that happened that was really twisted. For one, she was kept ignorant both by her family and him. She was lied to by him, which, considering how she was essentially an innocent bystander, was completely unnecessary. But the biggest unnecessary act, one that's goes beyond cruel and is just flat out malicious and evil of him, was that he became her lover. She knew nothing. He got nothing out of messing with her, emotionally and mentally manipulating her, besides some sick enjoyment. That makes him a sadistic monster in my book.
Let's not forget that, while she was pouring out her heart, speaking of how deeply hurt she was, he was thinking such things as,
Ahh, such a foolish and comical woman. A foolish woman whose intelligence is inferior to beasts. A pitiful, ugly woman brought up through sin.
Not a shred of empathy was displayed. That's some sociopathic shit right there.
He had options if he truly cared. He could have informed her of what was going on, or at least gave her some hints so that she could realize it herself (except apparently he didn't think she had the mental capacity for it.) They could have set up some plan where she decided to run away, having "fallen in love" with some pretend commoner, or that she had a pious revelation and wanted to enter the monastery and gotten out that way long before the guy set off the rebellion and killed her family. He was just as guilty of keeping her ignorant as her family was, except worse because he thought less of her for it and condemned her.
So at the end of the day, he's a self-righteous, pretentious monster.

@Sahmir I'm pretty sure that was her own inner thoughts. Remember that this is from her perspective, and thus most, if not all, of those thought boxes should be hers. She was calling herself ugly and foolish, lamenting how ignorant she was her entire life. It's not obvious, but he did actually care about her. He just couldn't act on it and reveal everything to her. With how naive she was there was the risk that she might unintentionally reveal that he is a spy while casually talking with one of her family members. To the very end, she never truly knew what it was like outside till her house was burned down. Sure, she knew that the people were poor, but she didn't truly understand why. She was the epitome of sheltered, regardless of how intelligent she might have been.

As for why she was so broken and went with execution, her entire life was destroyed. Her home was burned down with most of her family, she probably witnessed both of her parents die in front of her, and the reality of how luxurious her life was at the expense of others was only just hitting her. The amount of hate suddenly directed at her wasn't much better. Her family may have been horrible people, but she loved them and they loved her. She knew nothing of how horrible they truly were to other people, and they made sure of that by keeping her so sheltered.

All in all, it was too much, and the idea of living the rest of her life in some monastery in the mountains while lamenting everything that happened felt like it would have been horrible and unbearable. She was over it and just wanted it all to end so she could rest eternally. At the very least that way she could reunite with the only people that she believed truly cared about her, namely her now dead family. However, now that she regained her memories, she has come to the (unnecessary) conclusion that she isn't done atoning for the sins of her family. She probably figures that she has no choice but to live with these memories, and thus since death didn't save her she feels she has no choice but to go with option B, the Monastery, while punishing herself all the while.

Both our MCs are heartbroken and either seek death(In Shirley's case before she was reborn) or attempt to close off all emotions in order to survive(As is the case for both Shirley once she realized she can't use death to escape, and Kaid when he was forced to sentence her to death). Both Kaid and Shirley have it hard, only Kaid didn't have to remember what it's like to see his family and home burn to the ground while mistakenly believing that their lover(who is responsible for her family's death btw) never actually loved them, nor does he remember what it's like to have his head cut off. Even if she never gets back together with Kaid, I just hope that Shirley can eventually learn to forgive herself for her ignorance and eventually come to love herself again. The sins of her parents are not hers to bear, nor should they be.

Looking back at it, I could see how they might be her's. However, it was really poorly done on the mangaka's part, as with the guy in the panel, it makes it so that it could be interpreted as either's thoughts.
Also, no, I still stand by my original opinion of him being a heartless monster. Even if he didn't think those thoughts, it still doesn't explain him going as far as him becoming her lover. Even if he liked her, he should have held back and not involved her heart like that. That was extremely selfish and cruel of him. Also, he didn't have to explain to her what was going on to save her. He could have lied to her and told her that there was an assassination attempt being carried out on her family and that she needed to be secreted out or something. Basically, my point is that he did nothing to save her; he didn't even attempt to save her. He just let her go down with her family.
And I meant sending her out to the monastery before her was family killed. I'm with you in that I agree that she was broken and didn't want to go on; not many people would want to live on after such an event. I also agree that she should forgive herself. There's a reason why criminals will deliberately not give information out to some people in order to keep them from being labeled an accomplice, should the criminal get caught.

@sahmir we never hear the guy's inner thoughts, only the mh. i have tried to reply to you twice but dex just wasn't working. anyway i think you overestimate what he could have done back then, and he couldn't have carelessly told her the truth either, remember just by telling her about his origins, she was about to go to her father to ask him to solve it which would have not only ended bad for the guy but in turn forsaken all the people. I also don't think he is as cruel as people make him out to be. Just remember that the whole reason for him being there in the first place is to save the people, so he couldn't forsake them, and i definitely don't think that it's fair to compare him to a rapist which is what someone earlier did in the comments...

@Sahmir @higher87 Both of you have good points. Indeed, as Sahmir points out he should have done more, but there was the ever present risk that she would naively mention what he says or does to her family, thus ratting him out and ruining everything. As higher87 mentioned, she was about to tell her father about Kaid's origins simply because she wanted to help his land with fertilizer. As such, while he should have done more, he either couldn't do more or didn't know what could be done without risking the lives of hundreds. Remember, he may be smart, but he was 14 when he first arrived, so he was really young and inexperienced to be playing spy in a tyrant noble-family's home. Sure, maybe he got some training, but how much training can you cram into a child's head before they are barely ready to infiltrate a wasp's hive? it took him two years to dig up information, and during that time he slowly fell in love with her, whether he realized it or not. It's not something he could have helped, especially when she was the one he was assigned to as a servant. For all we know, maybe he actually contacted his superiors within those two years and asked for their help in pulling her out, but they refused either because it was too much of a risk or simply because she is a member of the family they despise so much and thus hate her just because of that.

Ultimately, the entire situation was all sorts of messed up, and anything he could have done he likely wouldn't realize till after the fact once he had time to think about all the ways he could have saved her, and he's had 15 years to brood on the fact that he was directly involved in her death. Hindsight being 20/20 can be a real kick in the gut as I'm sure Kaid understands real well.

My biggest point that I keep mentioning that isn't being addressed is that he didn't have to go as far as being her lover. That's the part that hurt her the most, too. It doesn't matter that he fell in love (which we don't actually know whether he did or not, that's just presumption). If anything, it's even more messed up if he did "love" her because he knew why he was there, he should have not acted on his emotions. Again, that was selfish and cruel on his behalf. It would have hurt enough being betrayed by someone you thought of as a friend, but a lover? There's absolutely no justification here for that. Honestly, I think that played a large part in her reaction towards the end of her life. She might have been more inclined to go live in the monastery if she hadn't felt such complete despair from her family dying and her lover betraying her. So if anything, he probably contributed to her death.

@Sahmir suppose you had to infiltrate instead of him, suppose the only reason you were hired was to tend for the young lady, and that's the same reason for being picked due to being "close to her age". If his mission is to stay long enough for him to gather intel, then he can't displease anyone, even more so the person he was hired to serve. Whether he loved her or not, it's clear that MH loved him and I think it would have been her who asked him and not the opposite if anything. Remember she would be the master in that relationship and he is a servant. As for how they ended up as a couple, i don't know about his relations b4 infiltrating, but for the girl it would have been the first boy around her age that she got to talk to, even most people older than her (servants) avoided her so she was very lonely. He was kinda the only "guy" in her world, and the only one who would talk to her and keep her company. But anyway, suppose she asked him out and he said no, because he knows it's all just for his mission, what happens then? If she is heartbroken, she will ask her parents to make him leave = mission failed.
