Argh! Again with this "what author meant by that?" bullshit?! No! The question is "what do you think it is about?"! The author is dead, so, unless they left a will (i.e. said themselves what it means), any logical interpretation is correct.
The more important part is that it does not matter what the author meant, even if they're alive. A work of fiction stands on its own. Its meaning doesn't suddenly change even if its author goes insane and proclaims that all its characters are aliens or robots, for example.

I'll grant exceptions only for works where the authors insert their comments into the work itself, e.g. author's notes in manga volumes, or forewords in books. I'm already skeptical of granting this exception to e.g. re-releases of past works, lest we get into "Did Han Solo shoot first?" territory. Same issue with sequels.

When it comes to nonfiction, I'm more open to asking what the author meant, because a) I care more about the mentioned ideas than the book itself, b) nonfiction is often part of a much larger body of work, and c) nonfiction authors elaborate on their works in a myriad ways incl. blog posts, interviews, podcasts, etc.

This man is so dense he makes tungsten take notes
Remember Chapter 1? Re-read it. Both think the other is only physically interested. He tried kissing her in Chapter 17, she fled, making clear she shares the same thought. They reinforced this initial idea in Chapter 17 and will likely continue thinking so. I wouldn't call him dense he tried and got rejected making another attempt wouldn't be easy.

"What is the author thinking" is similar to "how do I hook-up with my crush" I guess. Modern Japanese Literature = get laid 101. That's how to motivate the students.

Aside, I really like how the art crosshatches the skirt and pants, and how the lines follow the planes of movement in the fabric. Nice job!

Literary studies. Not even once. They leave you with a PTSD and a lot of triggers.
After all the time I spent contemplating Barthes, I think the fundamental truth behind "death of the author" is that "Being wrong is the number one form of knowledge accumulation." It's not even close.

There's still some value in asking the question. But it's silly to try and grade their correctness. Just say "good pondering, have a cookie."

I wouldn't say he's dense, he's already tried and been rejected, so trying again isn't easy.
you wrote this in the most confusing way possible.

I think catcher is an interesting book to reference in the manga. Kind of referring to the missed connections and coming of age thing. Anxiety, uncertainty, and becoming an adult.
