As someone's who's only gotten into this story YEARS after it's long since fallen into obscurity, to anyone even further into the future who like me has also binged through this series, i would like to give my extensive thoughts.
As of recently i've very much gotten into the genre of romance stories focusing on the "Forbidden love" between those of the same family.
Sadly there aren't very many that reach exactly what i'm looking for, but this story was definitely one of them.....for the most part.
Out of the three Incest Romance stories i've read to completion, the first being Siscon Ani to Brocon Imouto shoujikki ni nattara, and the second being Shitaishitaishtai, I think this story definitely handles the real consequences of incest to best. You can really feel the effect of Ai and Utsuru's forbidden love all throughout this story. And at the same time, there's a very real relationship between them, a heartfelt and truly loving dynamic that makes their romance feel believable. That is until....the end.
When the preverbal "cat is out of the bag" and the sibling's relationship comes to light. I don't know about anyone else, but from that point on I genuinely i think the author completely overdid the consequences of their romance. To the point that it started to be laughably over the top.
So not only is there mother(The worst character don't
@Me) suspicious, Shuuji(Who's motivations flip flop so hard between wanting Ai, rooting for Ai, then wanting her again, it's insane) is trying even harder to push himself onto Ai, but now THEIR DAD dies??? and then mom goes fucking nuclear and disowns her son and then has the NERVE to say "oh but i still love you"??? and then we have to spend just agonizing chapter after chapter of getting beaten over the head with "oh but it gets WORSE". Don't get me started on the time skip and how fucking exhausting it was just watching the story slip further and further into "Okay guys, this is it, we're REAAAAALLY gonna end with the siblings never being together here it is guys, it's REAAAALLY happening!" On god my eyes started just skimming over this section after awhile.
And then comes the most controversial part of this story, the magical "Dead dad note" leading to every incest enthusiasts FAVORITE plot twist "WE WERE NEVER BLOOD RELATED TO BEGIN WITH!" and wow....there is SO MUCH to unpack there.
1, Magical plot twist deus ex machina that PERFECTLY fixes everything, with very little build up to it.
2, Negating most if not all of the actual consequences of Utsuru and Ai's relationship, all that tension and taboo-ness about their forbidden love just magically and swiftly undone.
3, The implications this has on their mother. IMO one of the most clear examples that this wasn't a very well thought out plot twist. At first, the mother's extreme NUCLEAR behavior was understandable, given her circumstances. Despite how much of an unlikable person she was, her motivations made sense. But with the fucking note from the dad she COMPLETELY loses the only thing making her not a hate-able hag. Because.....SHE KNOWS that Utsuru isn't her son. And suddenly was magically okay with Utsuru and Ai after Utsuru discovered the note??? Nah screw their mom(Not literally, she ain't even a milf ong). After everything she put her kids through, and the pathetic showings of "remorse" she had, she deserves nothing more than the no contact treatment and to never see her grandkids.
4, Let's be honest people, we're here for incest. "Secretly stepcest" is such a tired and cowardly way to sweep away all the moral dilemmas and taboo controversy under the rug. If you're gonna spend 99 percent of your story exploring the consequences and implications of forbidden sibling love, COMMIT to it for god's sake. And if you wanna go the step sibling route, at least be upfront about it.
And then there's that just plain random plot twist about Utsuru's being the product of an incest relationship, like....???? What was the point of that???? Just to slip in SOME blood incest to make up for the last second bait n switch with the main pair??? Such a weird ass plot twist that served little to no purpose.
Although i have to admit, after all the build up and AGONIZING beating you over the head with the excessive sadness, there was a undeniable satisfaction to seeing the payoff of Utsuru and Ai finally having their chance together to not have anyone get in the way of their love. So in that respect, the ending of this series did deliver.
So overall, while I would say this was a very enjoyable read for the most part, the segments that were bad had some EXTREMELY questionable writing choices near the end. So while it doesn't completely ruin the experience, it does sour it quite a bit. Especially if you're as big into this type of story as i am. But at the end of the day the story's majority is spent focusing on the rock solid dynamic between Utsuru and Ai, and that's enough for me to still call True Love an enjoyable incest romance story. In my personal ranking i'd probably put at no. 2 in terms of quality, but number 3 in terms of personal enjoyment.
