The first line seems a bit confusing. Cunning might not have been the right word. Ruthless?
Cunning does seem off, but ruthless has nothing to do with it. The cunning refers to acting deceptive, which he certainly failed to do. But it's just absurd to say that someone who pretended to be a hero for so long and was actually betraying them did not possess cunning. Moreover, in this situation, the opportunity to be deceptive presented itself to him on a silver platter; everyone else who hadn't seen him reveal his hand still thought of him as a good guy.

So yeah, for me the issue is the statement that he "didn't possess" cunning. I think it would be better to say "He lacked the will to be deceptive/cunning and take advantage of that situation to escape." since he basically gave up pretending to be a hero any more (and the reason he gave up was because he had been defeated by a noble who despite that was genuinely heroic; he couldn't pretend anymore when he wasn't even stronger after all the help he had gotten. At least, that's how I understand it.)

But I don't know, maybe it's an accurate translation and the author just portrayed that character weirdly.

From what I remember about the WN, Kalos seemed to have genuinely cared about Hilde and wanted to make sure she didn't turn out like him. That's why he didn't try to use her to escape. He couldn't deceive her anymore and if he had, Hilde would be in trouble for aiding a traitor.

So I think the proper word here would be that Kalos did not possess the will to escape using Hilde.

Yeah, so it's not about having guilt cunning or not, but that he wasn't so ruthless as to exploit Hilde for a bit more time.

Glad to see I was wrong about Hilde. I thought she'd be the type to fly off the handle because she couldn't accept that her master was the bad guy. At least she won't be causing them extra trouble.

The statement doesn't say he doesn't have cunning, it says he doesn't have the cunning "to take advantage of that situation to escape", I think the qualifying portion of the statement is pretty important.

It's like saying an S rank adventurer doesn't have the strength to kill an ancient dragon or something. Nobody denies that the adventurer is strong, but it's still entirely valid to say they don't have the strength to kill something stronger. It's like failing a bluff check even when it's the thing you stat in most, some things are just harder to get out of than others.

Kalos was cunning, but he was a planner who had spent his time ingratiating himself with the guild and society in general (and not to mention, his plans were those of his organization, they weren't necessarily of his own clever making). This situation was spur of the moment, and I don't think it's as favorable for him as you imply it was. Remember, he had literally phase changed and was wearing very evil-looking gear, and had a giant evil tattoo on this chest, it would be obvious to anyone looking at him after their initial reaction that he wasn't the Kalos they knew (as he kept this skillset secret from everyone except the ones he killed) and to not immediately trust him.

I don't think this was about him lacking the will to take advantage of Hilde or anything like that. He just didn't see a way out and decided to just take the easy way out rather than fighting till the end. That's essentially what his flashback painted him as too, someone who would take the easy way out when offered rather than struggle with his own ability.

This is all in retrospect, but if the Marquis truly did manage to narrow down the culprit beforehand, the man could've offered support behind the scenes or even tipped MC of the enemy's true identity ffs. If he was just being wary of the MC, then that wariness could have cost the lives of the MC party had they not been lucky and made preparations of their own volition beforehand.

Instead of being impressed that the Marquis showed big brain skills based on how it's written here, I just got frustrated that if that was the case, then he didn't act on that deduction at all.
They're basically dealing with a big conspiracy, so it would make sense for Marquis Haultodd to keep his cards hidden. It's been quite a bit since the chapters when Elma and the Marquis met, so maybe I'm not recalling, but I don't think they interacted enough or in a way for them to trust each other completely.

Well, now we've reached the end of the WN. Perhaps the author is working directly on LN and/or manga? That would be nice.

Considering that it's coming out as an anime, I think we can have some decent hopes in that regard. (I would guess that the anime would take it right to this point.)

  • This does leave a decent setup for the next phase
  • Mystery group behind the zerg really knows a lot. Good chance for another reincarnee -- the Poison Zombie build pretty much screams "game expert"!
  • What's Halutod's angle? Seems like a pretty cunning guy. He knows something.
  • Where's the yandere cousin? Haven't seen her for a while. (Thankfully! She's a pretty nasty character.)
  • More of Hilde? I've always kind of liked her and she would be a fun addition to the party. And she's short a mentor...
  • We're about due for another crazy chick be drawn to Elma's Crazy Chick Magnet self.
