Sure his build is based on pain...
but someone whose fighting style relies on being in constant pain.
It's a poison status build, not a pain build. There's no mention of "pain" anywhere.
He uses a skill that reverses poison damage into healing, the collar doubles poison damage, the sword gives poisoned state.
He also has HP -> MP and extra HP, MP and Def. So the build essentially out heals incoming damage and gives constant MP regen.

As for why he doesn't just swing, dude's stabbed through his sternum or solar plexus. There's a few places on the body where if you get hit or stabbed the shock of it prevents you from doing anything.

Kidney, Liver, solar plexus or sternum are most well known and taught in various martial and combat systems as a place to aim for.
Look at Elma's sword and where it got stabbed into.

I think this build is something like a hidden build just like how Elma choose Heavy Knight because he understand how this tanky Heavy Knight, but also capable dealing a lot damage.
Yeah it's a build that's not possible to discover with perma death, which is why Elma asks Kalos, "Who taught you those skills?"

Kalos: "All for the sake of...that person."

Problem with cheese builds like these are they are probably commonly used because of how strong and intuitive it is making it the most studied build and have several counters

The one thing I hate is that he stops to monologue after being stabbed, instead of swinging his ALREADY RAISED sword at the guy who's busy driving a sword through his chest. Like you have the perfect chance to take him down with you, but instead you go "But how? I'm supposed to be OP tho? U scrubs shouldn't have been able to beat my meta PVP build!"

Life ain't a game, you don't despawn/ragdoll as soon as you take a fatal hit. You can still fcking finish swinging a sword. People have been known to continue fighting for a few minutes while impaled by multiple spears - that's an extreme case, I know, but someone whose fighting style relies on being in constant pain should be used to pain enough that they don't freeze up as soon as they're stabbed.
As a battle junkie it’s a form of respect. As he noted he doesn’t care about the end goal of his organization he wanted death fights and even though he thought he had the superior position, he still lost. Think of like him talking to himself after losing. If you take out a powerful foe that’s less battles for others, and if you become a stepping stone you as well help grow a stronger fighter in your stead, think of that as a wonton fighters honor. What’s the point of finishing off someone who already beat you? It’s no victory and you could care less for the cult beyond using it as justification.

I also assume him claiming he hates him the most to also be nothing but a facade to hype himself up (as well as to match his gears vibe)

As you see through the talks and fight him looking down on him wasn’t truly the case, when he was struck he didn’t freak out that a lower life form hurt him, when his attack pattern was countered he didn’t belittle or get annoyed instead he either kept going or even congratulated them of sorts for managing to pull something off. He shows respect where respect is due during the fight.

Thanks for these superb chapters!

I hope Studio GoHands will give this one justice. They usually start things pretty well but make some not-so-good choices down the road in making their animes (they are almost as bad as Studio Millepensee).

It's basically how PoE works. You can make a build centered about the niche interaction between 1 or 2 items and a specific skill, and then you go crazy optimising the build by stacking everything that can support it.

That PvP build is exactly that. Elma says it's a hated and well known build, so it make sense he knows how to counter it.

I see several people already offered possible explanations, here's more:

Perhaps in this MMO-stats-based world, there is no continuation after your HP depletes unless you have a skill or equipment ability that would allow for that.

And even if not that, keep in mind he had his meme-pvp-build nullified. He likely never had that happen, nevermind take a strong (or fatal, obviously) hit while in his "normal" state. Perhaps that feeling shocked his body to stop. When all this happens in a very small period of time, your body and mind won't necessarily listen to each other with all the new experiences. Because the new inputs will conflict with your other intention of wanting to swing, but getting interrupted.

Also, when you aren't fully committed to an action (the fight, which Kalos here wasn't; he was too committed to "that person" and his full belief in effective immortality), you're going to freeze if it goes awry. Which Elma and co made happen.

Also, thanks trap scans. Very satisfying batch release.

Love this series; every win feels deserved. Sure, it's the same convenient "game knowledge" type character you find in tons of isekai, but the level of effort shown by MC and the gambles he has to take in order to compensate for his lack of power makes it much more engaging.

This was actually very well thought out. Self-harm skills are often the heart of the best builds. Miss Cleric suggesting a poison cure was neat, but the poison resist buff was pretty smooth.
