What an evil princess. She basically tried to break his spirit for years using the insane orders from the morning till the evening, simply because she can't and doesn't want to understand his way of life, his life philosophy. So, she wanted to destroy it by pushing the dude too far, probably by making him hate that memory he cherishes. She was sadistically waiting for the moment he cracks. Unfortunately for her, he actually decided to save himself while she was absent.

So he did exactly what she wanted leaving his life of servitude and helping others thus deciding to save himself. The dude was pushing himself more as kid making food 3 times everyday for entire orphanage also doing everything at orphanage alone, he didn't much at in palace compared to that.

There's a big psychological difference between working hard for something appreciated and working hard totally pointlessly. At the orphanage his hard work made the staff and children happy. The princess, however, wanted to make him hate his hard work. She's just a bully. When a bully with a hollow life sees a hard-working person, they want to destroy all of that hard work.

In her defense, we've only see her for a handful of chapters and don't really know what the hell happened to make her push Lilt to this extent. It's still too soon to come to conclusions. IMO, she seemed reasonable enough as a kid but lost her way somewhere in the middle. Cut her some slack, ya'll.
