Well if you really want to know, it was mentioned a chapter or 2 ago that his horns are rumoured to grant immortality and (WN spoilers incoming) he is over a hundred years old (part of why the immortality rumours exist) and was a close personal friend of the previous king of the kingdom they are travelling to (and that the soldiers are from), and helped raise the current ruler and acted as their personal tutor for quite a long period of time and so all of the politically minded nobles want to use his influence as a bargaining chip. He is also royalty from the nearby beastman country, but gave up his right to succession and is the current leader of one of the most powerful adventurer clans in that beastman county.
