Hm...how much realism will be lost in a fight between one unarmed but decently-trained karateka vs several men, with at least one armed...

So was she raped? Like the dude was gone for a week, did they just keep her captive for a week and not do anything to her

The translation is so Pepega that I'm not even sure why they want to attack him in order to get the materials. Will they pop out of him when he dies like a game? If there was this kind of a culture, why would she tell them about what happened knowing that they'd be attacked for it? Are they trying to force out the location of the corpse, and if so, why wouldn't they just do that immediately when they got wind of it when our MC was unconscious??

@N2O From the way i take it: They came for the materials which were taking back to the girls hut with him, then they took the materials.. after they took the materials they took the girl and tied her up knowing that the guy would likely come back.

@Tier ah that makes sense. still kinda odd though, and i know this sounds fucked up but unless they wanted to use her as bait, there isn't much reason not to kill/rape the girl. heck the whole thing is just confusing. They let the girl live peacefully outside the village for year, but when she tried to heal someone that defeated a hobgoblin, now all of a sudden they want to drug and rape her.

Dude should have at least taken some goblin clubs with him if nothing else.

@fanghue Nah, it's not so outlandish to think this is how it would realistically go. Back when the girl's respectable master was still around, they were well established. When the girl was left alone, an unmarried young woman of no local background, her status started dropping. However, it's not like the horny youths would immediately storm her house and gang rape her. It was a gradual decline. They likely harassed her occasionally, but were afraid of the elders not approving of any gross crimes that would cause chaos in the village. However, the wild stranger and hobgoblin loot appearing changes a lot. None of the villagers would easily accept a totally unknown man who could even beat a hobgoblin alone. He would be a high risk if hostile, plus they don't know anything about him. So, he would be a perfect excuse for the delinquents to attack the girl's place since she's sheltering the stranger. The elders would now turn a blind eye to it.

They kept her alive as a bait. Alive, she would also be good for raping. If they haven't yet raped her, it's either for the sake of plot convenience, or maybe it wasn't the plan at all. Perhaps the face tattoo delinquent leader actually wants to forcefully marry her. Who knows.

I think that your theory would also explain why they didn't immediately assault her. While she didn't have much standing, would an insular village like that want a pack a rapists roving around their homes, especially with their own wives and daughters equally vulnerable? The youths, while undisciplined, also know that raping someone would also drastically reduce their standing in the village, even if it was just a "nobody". Add to that, there's probably no where else they can go unless they want to try to go full bandit, but then the real heat starts coming down in the form of military patrols. The forced marriage makes more sense, now she's "property" and it's no longer the villages' business.

It's pretty abhorrent to think about, and whether or not it's "realistic" I am kind of glad that they side stepped the issue entirely. It's almost a cliche at this point in fantasy stories I've read to have the female lead "almost" get raped or some fodder tertiary character get raped (because their chastity doesn't matter) in order to up the stakes or show how EEEVILLL the antagonist is.

@vannn It would have been slightly different in different parts of the world, but medieval times in Europe were quite unforgiving, doubly so for women. For example, vagrancy was often illegal in towns. In practice it meant a young person would absolutely need to have an established family or a guardian (if not the parents, then an uncle, etc) or already be employed by someone. Self-employment might have been difficult because trades were restricted and controlled by the guilds, through the master-apprentice system. So, if a youth was orphaned, they absolutely needed some kind of replacement guardian or a respectable employer. Otherwise they would have been a criminal. Pregnancy and children were forbidden outside of wedlock for decent women. This rule actually still kept haunting well into the 20th century, which meant a "mistake" practically forced people to get married because a single mother would have been scandalous. In the more distant past a man could force himself onto a vulnerable woman, and if the woman got pregnant, she might not have had much of a choice but to marry the man as she would have otherwise been labelled a whore and faced dire consequences.

All in all, the medieval time was a dark and shitty period. I'm glad the vast majority of fantasy doesn't reflect the reality but has the jolly adventurous, sword & sorcery Middle Ages going on in its pure fantasy glory.

Another "TL Note" reaction spammer that can only make google or deepl spout nonsense, but still uploads it? What's the social pull to do this? Mental illness? Not beaten enough as a kid?
