From the history books, I saw they were scraped to the bones after weeks ... IIRC 6 - 7 weeks. The criminal probably died of hunger & thirst and the ants cleaned up the corpse. People are actually watching him die back then, lol, day in day out based on accounts. So no one will help ... unless he actually is more powerful, e.g. has an army that can actually wipe out that village.

Well, if he actually survived that ordeal of ants, or had a means to escape, he will wipe out that village.

Anecdote:
I actually did an experiment and shoved a lizard dead into an ant line ... they finished it in 2h. Lizard is about the size of a gecko. Ants sure are diligent.

right I almost forgot that ants don't have lungs, they get enough oxygen just from absorbing it through their exoskeletons. This method of breathing is found only on insects. Most arachnids have very simple lungs called book lungs so they can get considerably larger than insects because they can take in more oxygen. As creatures get larger, the respiratory systems get more complicated. Human lungs are actually overkill for creatures our size and weight when you consider the insane speed we can reoxygenate our bodies compared to any other creature on earth. The main limiting factor for human size unlike most creatures is our muscle and bone structures rather than our respiratory systems.

If he gets the rank up, he can at least go to a bigger city and take on higher paying requests. Which is probably exactly what the guild doesn't want.

I definitely think they set him up to fail or at least to tie him down so he's doing jobs for a while (eg, paying back the fee). But they stopped short of giving him an impossible request, so it's not like they're messing with him. Just no incentive to make things easy for him.

We'll see the truth of their intentions once he completes the requests, anyway.

The threat of the ants was described to come from their venom, perhaps it's so potent that a few stings are enough to make an adult drowsy. That would be dangerous enough deep in the forest, no need for the ants to be some kind of super predator.

The guild wants their sla- workers, and they want them  cheap, so Class 5 probably just means you'll be able to be dispatched by the guild whenever they'd like some extra hands, and for an "affordable" price (merits, not actual dough)!
