Good catch. It's obviously the baron she's right behind. That is a detail I missed since I was focused on the dead child with a dagger in their head. He really couldn't have waited any longer.

One of the great things about this series is the attention to detail in terms of perspective and positioning of different people. Like I feel like the hero could have been an isekai from Japan and that's why his student used a Japanese sword style without a Japanese sword, whereas in another series I might think they just added in whatever cool sword move they thought of. It makes it rewarding to read, reread, or talk about.

He's been living in the wilderness fighting monsters of various heights. His entire thought process was likely "Enemy at ___ coordinates, throwing knife", even though a very short humanoid generally has a specific, different meaning in cities.

He was going off his aura senses or whatever we call it when he decided to throw the knife, so it wasn't based on the child's appearance at all, from what I can tell. Going for the head, regardless of enemy type, is likely a good general strategy though. A wounded enemy can still fight, while a lethal weapon in the leg is still often lethal since you needed that blood. You don't use a knife if you aren't going for lethality in the first place.
