This is starting to remind me of another reincarnation-type isekai, that also happens to be a gender-bender one.

In "Yasei no Last Boss ga Arawareta!", there was a similar plot point. MC was a guy from our world that was isekai'ed into his character from a video game. Throughout the entire series, the MC keeps speculating about what happened to the original soul of the body he is possessing. Eventually, you find out that it's the exact same soul: When the original Lufasu was sealed away, her soul was sent to our world and reincarnated as a guy with no memories. The game he played was made by one of Lufasu's subordinates to help awaken his memories. Which.. only half worked.

So I am thinking this might be a similar situation: There was only ever one soul and either the princesse' soul was sent to earth for a while, became the ojisan, and then went back or the ojisan was reincarnated as the princess originally without his memories and then only later were his memories awakened.
In terms of narrative, an advantage of a setup where both souls were originally one is that the protagonist can gain a narratively satisfying powerup from this realisation. Whereas if two friendly souls are in a body, it makes less sense for there to be a powerup if one of the souls must be forsaken or killed. The latter makes more sense for stories where characters are possessed by demons, like in Naruto or Jujutsu Kaisen; there the narrative can say "this demon held you back, so beating it made you stronger" or "by kililng this demon, you've gained its power".

Man, how many times has she had to have been prepared to die for her liege in this series. Kind of turning into a "how many times do we have to teach you this lesson old man!" situation considering how many times she's also been chided for going overboard.

Misc.
  • Six rulers/kings. (ch 24, etc.) These are the current rulers of the various races/groups:
    Sword Master/King of Lundberg;
    Merchant King of Daniemi;
    Dragon King of Dunia;
    Pope of Artemite;
    Steel King of Cradle Grave;
    Spirit King of Elves
  • Six bodies of the demon king. (Dunia: Jaw; Cradle Grave: Eye; Lundberg: Heart, ??, ??, ??) So there's at least some correspondence between body parts and kingdoms.
  • Races: Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Merfolk, Harpies, Beast people
i don't want to sound like a dick or nothin' but you forgot 1 race and 1 king: demonic race, and their demon king (so 7 races and 7 kings. may be relevant later)

that aside, you did an excellent post.

Corrections and arguments are always welcome. :)

In many fantasy stories, demons are just another race, though frequently (but not always) more aggressive than other races. But in this story, they seem more like an attacking wave of cancer and malice. They don't have a set form, but rather twist and mutate into malignant shapes. I.e. they don't seem to be a race -- at least as far as we know. They're more like a disease.

In any case, I was looking to understand the mentions in text. E.g. "Six rulers" are mentioned -- with the demon king not being counted in that group.

Also, I'm not sure about the number of races. "Beast people" is not mentioned as a race, but there are different types of beast ears (bunny, cat, fox?), and several types are present in Artemite, so I'm guessing that they belong to one "race". (JP lit frequently groups different animal types into one "beast race".) But then, are Harpies and Merfolk also "Beast Race"? Or are one or both of those their own separate race? IDK.

Also kingdoms are not all grouped by race. Lundberg and Daniemi are both human. And Cradle Grave and Dunia are both Dwarven. Even Artemite, which has more beast people, is still mostly human. So there's not a 1:1 correspondence between rulers and races.

I wonder if the reason I started to stop enjoying the more recent chapter is partly due to the expositions. They're kinda always there, but there seems to be more of them in later chapters (after around the Merchant King or Blacksmith Dwarf and Dragon, I think?)

author-san could have separated beast people by environment, maybe?
like, land beast people (mainly walking, eg: bunny folk), sea beast people (mainly swimming, eg: merfolk) and air beast people (mainly flying, eg: harpies)...

Could be. Author has given very little info on this. Just listed a few races once, and has had some non-human characters. We're off into "wild ass guess" territory on this one. Though I agree "land, air, sea" split is a reasonable wild ass guess. 🤔

The pay for having an original artstyle is making it very difficult to understand what the hell is happening, especially during fights. Great chapter though, happy to see some huge developments and old man.

I got nothing. I went back and skimmed... still no idea.

He might just be a miscellaneous member of the chivalric order... We've seen before that Lord Volf is very aware of the members of the order, able to name many of them after they got slaughtered at the last sealing ritual.
