Ngl, I think Kai had the right idea and that he shouldn’t tell Ichika about his feelings. I just don’t see what anyone (including Kai) would gain from it if he did tell her, since it’s not like she’s going to dump her gf for him or anything.

Anyway, using the word "lover" sounds too mature, I think. In our language, "pacar" is a gender-less pronoun for girlfriend/boyfriend. In another our language, there's also "bojo" which means wife/husband, and is also gender-neutral. Both words are commonly used every day.

Well, that's probably one of the perks of the Austronesian language family, where gendered words are rare.

Personally I think partner works just fine too, as far as non gendered lovers go, but I'll admit it has less flair than a dedicated word.

Cool to hear about pacar and bojo, thanks for sharing. Tend to hear about languages that have more trouble more often than ones that are even better.

When I first learned English when I was kid, I thought it was cool because you could specify the gender of words, making things more precise compared to our languages that tend do not have one, leading to many ambiguities where understanding context is crucial to avoid misunderstandings.

However, it turns out that gendered words seems present other problems nowadays.
