The chapter limitations I can somewhat understand, but Advanced Search? Really?

Attempting to bulk read while logged out with just the 10 chapters per day limitation is an inconvenience to actually reading humans, to say the least. Actually reading folks don't really pull up requests fast enough for that to matter. Also, does it reset 24 hours after hitting the limit, or after a specific server time?

Although, I thought we already had limitations in place that would throttle, or downright block the request if abused.

Cute. I mean reading in a private browser is pointless. If you don't want the MD chapter tracking, just click "mark all on page as read/unread" after you're done with that series.

Totes get you my dude, I do the same- well I used to but then I got so lazy that I didn't bother enough to open a new tab (true story). If you wanna keep your MD reading history (which is like kinda different from browser history) neat and tidy then it only takes a couple of extra seconds to do that thing where ya mark 'em all as read and then as unread and since you only do that to the ones you don't care much about then it shouldn't be a problem right?
Besides, there's still time for changes to be made. Maybe you can request somethin' like special treatment for yer ip or whatever? Get a lil' somethin' for me too while you're at it, if you can.

I'm assuming you meant it reset at a specific server time.

Now I'm curious.

• Would reading 10 chapters while logged-in count towards the limit if you log out? Probably not.
• Would the limit reset if you logged in after hitting the cap, would it allow you to continue reading as a guest if you then logged out?

The second one's a tedious workaround for @minhnghcm7 's concerns if that works, but I doubt it.

Okay. I just tested the scenarios that you mentioned. From what I checked, the feature has two trackers--one for the guest and another for the logged in account.

For first scenario, reading a chapter while logged in doesn't count towards the guest limit. The chapters read when logged in is tracked by the account tracker.

For the second scenario, logging in doesn't reset the guest tracker. It retains the number of chapters read when you were on guest mode. Furthermore, logging out doesn't clear the guest tracker too so you'll see the limit pop up if you already read at least 10 chapters on guest mode. I think the only way to reset is after midnight (though not sure if it's server or user's time).

Also, bear in mind that refreshing page while reading a chapter also counts towards the guest limit so I guess mobile guest users are fucked since smartphones tend to refresh pages if left for some time.

That's unfortunate. Although... for @minhnghcm7 's concern of chapter tracking, it does work as a workaround. If you hit the cap as a guest, go back to the title page, log in from a new tab, go back to the tabs/title(s) that you want to continue reading, hit refresh to "log you in" on those tabs, go back to the tab where you logged in, then log out from that tab, you can continue reading when you go back to the respective title's tab. Provided you did not refresh the page, it will think you're still logged in and allow you to continue reading, but it will fail to track/mark that chapter as being read because you aren't actually logged in. Too many steps, really, when you compare it to just reading as a guest before the chapter limit was implemented. Clicking "mark all pages as read/unread" after reading is still far simpler.

Oof, so hitting refresh 10 times while reading 1 chapter means you've read 10 chapters.

Goodness, I'm going to miss the MangaDex forums.

It is the one feature that allows scanlators to interact with and be appreciated by their readers. MangaDex is a huge part of the English-speaking manga community, so to take that away feels like abandoning the community's roots.

It is also the only place that I know of with a substantial amount of long-form and deep manga discussion. r/manga is probably the most populated and structured alternative, but only sentences and jokes get upvotes. Twitter is Twitter, and 4chan is 4chan. Chapter comments on official sites like MangaPlus and K-Manga are practically worthless. MyAnimeList's chapter discussions are dead.

Imo, in an ideal world, places for people deeply immersed in hobbies would move back to forum-style interaction.

What I like from forum style commentary is that you can easily go back and forth between quote and quoted post, something that you can't do in social style commentary.

I personally would prefer if MD just switched to a non-shit forum software, tbh.
Xenforo just sucks balls, both from user experience and also from site integration.
The social features don't seem promising though

Forums are definitely built for walls-o-text discussions, and social-style commenting ain't gonna cut it for that purpose. I don't see why we can't have both on the main page though. Why not keep the old feature of linking to the forums for discussions by just rebranding it, and have another for the shitposting social-style commenting?

The Merryweather one is an odd one. They are very open about wanting people of all types around the world to see their works.

Sounds like we may have a malicious korean company striking things semi-randomly.

Could they be possibly using AI detection to strike things without verifying what is what?

I don't know if anyone else caught it yet, but taking a quick look at where the official English link would take you, this is likely just another HORIZON, publishing company not wanting the author to make their work available somewhere else.

having this extra step to get to the chapter forums (that theyll probably remove in favour of just supporter comments eventually) just to be able to have discussions aint it. dex is the only platform i actually enjoyed conversing with people about series on. steep downward spiral

edit: so this new system puts general discussion and everything else into the old forums still, but chapter discussion still locked to supporters only, unless they decide to create a forum page themselves?

Sunsetting forum style comments really robs some of the identity of the site, definitely felt like a core community of people depending on the genre. And it's probably nice for translators of smaller titles to get direct feedback from a core crowd.

The message also makes it look like only supporters can comment at all. What does "Become a supporter to gain early access, too!" mean, early access to what?

Now that I am using the site more again I would not mind tossing a few bucks at the devs, but all this intransparency and feature creep really makes me hesitant.

Before this thread starts to get filled by doomposting (please stop, I don't want Reddit 2), the plan is to keep both the new comments and the forums alive at the same time, with each having its own purpose.
Title and chapter comments on the new system, and general chatting and discussion here in the forums (so yeah, lurkers, you can keep lurking as you've been doing up until now).
