I wish I had a familiar like Chito! I wonder what Chito looks like in their true form...

I always thought Chito was female, until she transmogrified into a male lion.. found a reference in chapter 3 where Chinatsu refers to “her” in a conversation with Makoto.

Yeah, it's weird. Chapter 3 in the official English release refers to Chito as a her. But then in chapter 57, Chito's referred to with a 'he' pronoun while they were under the plush toy spell effect.

Translators often make guesses about this kind of thing, especially in early chapters, because Japanese often uses neutral pronouns or omits them altogether in a way that's hard to duplicate in English without sounding unnatural. Sometimes you find out much later that they guessed wrong. This most recent chapter also refers to Chito as female, but that could still be an assumption. I might have a vague recollection of a conversation in some chapter that explicitly establishes it, but I can't be bothered to look.

For that matter, it's a shapeshifting spirit(?). It may not have a gender at all, or it could be female and just took the shape of a male lion.

Maybe it's contextual and the pronoun they're referred to as depends on their form.

In 57, it was an unrelated and random kid that called her a he and Makoto might have been just playing along. Or it was a translation mistake. As mentioned earlier, Japanese and pronouns don't mix well at all. Even the "gendered" pronouns aren't exactly a set in stone rule. You'll meet men using watashi and women using boku, for example.

Early on, Chito was refered specifically as female, when Nao called her an "old lady"

As for the lion's form, I'm guessing the author went with that form because it's more emblematic and well known than the female appearance of a lion. Wouldn't read too much into that. I mean, Chito turned into a talking tomato and a freaking plastic bag. XD

Oh, that's the bug I was talking about earlier. If somebody who has the ability to create threads hasn't created a thread for comments, then unfortunately you (in general) can't comment until somebody does. As soon as somebody who can, does, then anybody can add a comment to it. Like I said before, it's a bug that they're working on and hopefully it'll get fixed sooner, rather than later.....

The only thing I can tell you is keep coming back and hopefully somebody will have created a thread by then... Sorry.

That's not quite it. Apparently you can still comment, and if you're paying you get your comment up on that first tab thing that comes up when you click for the comments. Ordinary people's comments only show up if you click again on the "read ## older comments".

About eight months in-universe.

Makoto started school in early spring, and as of this chapter it’s barely autumn - kids are wearing hoodies and jumpers. Mangaka is keeping the time and season’s linear. This is why they’ve met three Harbingers - Spring in chapter 5, Summer in chapter 32, and Autumn in chapter 72, and I reckon Winter is coming.

Chinatsu is nine, Makoto is 15.

Correction: I was re-reading this manga recently, and Chinatsu turned 10 in chapter 74.

Akane is 21.
