Some of the design decisions were explained in earlier chapters, but it still bothers me that they're trying to propel an entire subway train using what is effectively jet engines on said train. For all the effort they're putting in to try and make those little jets strong enough to move the train, he could have introduced the concept of a steam engine and made something to beat the LNER Mallard. Instead they're needing to scrimp on weight because they can't make a strong enough jet. And need I remind anyone that they're planning on using this train to move both people and freight en masse, not just a small crew?

He wouldn't need to understand the specifics to introduce the concept. Knowing the specifics of how a steam engine works in our world could actually be a hindrance in that world, since they have magic that bends or outright breaks the laws of physics. All he needs is the basic concept of pushing pistons with steam, and the sense to start slow.

that's the problem... even the basic idea is lost on him since the mechanics confuses him. he gets the idea, not the process of it mechanicly... even if he did "study" about it by reading books about it just to further enhance the beauty of the buildings he used to make. Also, knowing the specifics actually may help the crafters more since they are so discriminated that knowing the knowhow and how to maintain such non-magic dependent transportation can actually undermine other jobs... especially if they monopolize the techniques related to said techs e.g. only Miyabi knows how to build and maintain the train so Beldini immediately tried to ban Miyabi to be the sole center of the project so that others can be on it too not turning the project into a goddamn Pripyat, Ukraine if Miyabi ever left.

and also... he's a single track minded idiot since day 1... he already chose the path he stubbornly clings to and were on Alicia's arc now, it'll be a good lesson for Miyabi.

So it'd need to withstand high pressure. It'd need a vent to reduce power and control power to the piston or a way to quickly condense steam back into water if going for a fully sealed design. He'd need a water enchantment or a source and a way to drain the water while not using it.

It'd still need a way for maintenance and replacing parts, and dealing with mineral scale. It'd still need a heat source that is capable of being replicated by someone other than himself.

If it's vented to simplify the design, he'd need atmosphere control for the tunnel. Even if not, supports and anti slime measures. Ventilation for ground gases.

A wind powered jet engine is much, much easier in comparison.

He's working with a ton of other craftsmen that are infinitely more skilled in their fields than himself, all he needs to do is give them the basic idea of boiling water and capturing the steam to operate a mechanism, they'll figure out the rest. Saying that he needs to know all the exact details of a steam locomotive to introduce the concept of a steam engine is like saying that an accountant needs to know the exact workings of a microchip so they can introduce the concept of calculators to a watchmaker.

Steam locomotives aren't even designed the way they are because that's what's needed for them to function, they're designed that way because it's a lot easier to shovel fuel into one big firebox than it is to keep two much smaller boilers fed evenly. That problem (as well as many others) would not exist though if you can just use magic to generate constant heat and steadily flow fresh water into a sealed chamber.
