I am of this mindset, that sweetness is enhanced by the existence of drama and vice-versa (hence why Precure is a surprisingly dark series, no one gets raped nor have their heads bitten off like some Madoka Magika girls, but the mention of WWII, Hugtan crying when she was being kidnapped, and all of Yuri's backstories are gut punches because of how dark those elements are when surrounded by all the cute and fluff of the magical girl genre).
My problem with this story is that it takes too long to update, so the arc feels much longer than it actually is, and Washio hasn't changed a darn thing about himself ever since the start of this story. Him refusing to defend himself and just accepting to leave the school like that without putting up a fight and even trying to hurt his students so they wouldn't feel bad for him leaving are just infuriating scenes to read through!
Especially because we still don't know why he feels the need to punish himself into being a loser despite his ability to be much better off financially and socially, so his choices come off as him being just a loser that doesn't deserve the love and admiration from all the girls surrounding him instead of a man that was hurt in the past and requires lots of therapy! By keeping everything about his past vague and just showing his worst traits, Washio's character suffers a lot and all the girls also come off as worse too for putting so much faith in him!
Washio is like a distorted Kiritsugu, instead of believing that the universe will magically benefit someone if another person is suffering (therefore he kills so someone else will be saved), Washio believes that if HE suffers, everybody else around him will be better off. Well, he's suffering a lot now, but the girls are no better off and they're about to get much, much worse results if this keeps up!
