This is just conjecture, but i think at this point its save to say that the way hikari rejected yuu in the past was probably one of those definite and complete refusals that women use to politely signal to men "stop asking me out, i am not interested in you" (think "i only see you as a brother").
That, coupled with the insecurity and inferiority complex eating away at him, have made him the mess he is today, and are the reason why he hasnt really pursued her for a while and is only just starting to get the courage necessary to confess again.

From @Litreara's translation, it says "experienced the fourth heartbreak", which leaves room to say that it might have happened without Hikari's direct participation.
I'll go on a limb and say that the second heartbreak was when he failed exams and did not get into the same school with Hikari, and the first one was when Hikari made it known to him that she does not see him as a man

My guess would be her attempting to set him up together with another girl (as told by her in ch. 12):

But whenever I set up something like that, he'd always look all shy and uncomfortable.
They'd hang out a few times, try it out, but it never lasted...

Hikari: "So, Ta~kun, what happened with that girl?"
Yuu: "Uh... well..."

And he'd give me that awkward look, trying to dodge the question.

As for the second one, I agree that it's probably about the exam.

But the sad weirdo is her friend which he was kissing the previous day. If he dated a random girl a year ago then sure, but the person and recency is the issue.

You could say that he is being a dick/bad guy by lying to Hikari about his phone and by not telling her about Yami. The way he confessed to Hikari ("loved you for 10 years") does not paint him in good light either since she knows something is up with Yami. All of it makes him seem like a spineless liar. Not the best optics

I wouldn't say he's quite "a bad guy" or "a good guy" I kinda think that's too much of a clean simplification of him

He's an a cowardly insecure teen who is scared of being open and honest with the girl he's in love with and is now realizing truly the effects of that behavior

His actions aren't justifiable at all but to an extent are understandable at least understandable enough we should give him a chance to learn from them and let him take responsibility

Yuu is not entitled to a relationship Hikari. Hikari, although she loves Yuu, seems to understand that currently a relationship with Yuu would be toxic and filled with misgivings. Perhaps if Yuu matures then they can rebuild their relationship.

What would you think of Yuu if it was revealed that—just as Yami realized her ex-boyfriend (Yuu) is actually Ta-kun (the guy Hikari likes)—Yuu also discovered that his ex-girlfriend (Yami-senpai) is none other than Aya-chan, Hikari’s so-called 'best friend'?

This has been the comment section of this godforsaken manga since ch.21, Everybody has been jumping the gun while author is giving crucial infos in dribs and drabs.
let's just join in on the bandwagon and have some fun. Because, knowing the author, this will end with nobody learning their lesson and still being a mess.

I'm on team "everyone should walk away". Hikari is too immature, Yami has bigger problems to solve and Yuu should have moved on from this puppy love mixed with inferiority complex already.

Yes all 3 of them are messes and should do some maturing and self care. Any romance would end up toxic at this point.
