I'm convinced now, the king really is trying to kill the hero. He keeps on arranging situations and manipulating people such that mc will be forced to use his powers as much as possible, and even when he knows he successfully shaved years and percentages off the heros life and maximum powers, he doesnt act repentantly in the least, just laughing it away.
