Considering the hero is an amateur when it comes to these specialised arts. His target dying almost instantly is a given.

Most of the low-level torturers can even impale them, let the victims wear their internal organs outside and still moan, live for days before dying of dehydration.

Experts normally don't let their targets die and as far as i can tell, there is no expert in recorded history.

From context of the earlier chapter those spikes were probably made of ice not stone since "only their bodies in pools of blood and bigger pools of water" remained at the scene.
