In that age I don't think her parents could have done a much kinder thing. But obviously what they did would make their daughter feel like her beloved was punished because she loved her and so she would feel like her feelings are wrong. I doesn't seem like Elizabeth McGovern returned Alice's feelings, but if they could meet again she might tell her that there is nothing wrong with her loving another woman.
This seemed ridiculous and trope-ridden at first, but I'm curious now.
