Dad is still pretty monstrous. He dragged his daughter home to shove her hand into the fireplace and then made her live in a separate manor alone (outside of what seems to be maybe 3 servants). And even after learning of a huge beam of light that could only have been related to her, hasn't even investigated

I completely agree. I just figure he's not quite deserving of the very worst punishments I can think of. Some frostbite-induced nerve damage, but not ice-waterboarding. His hands, and maybe a bit over halfway up to his elbows. That would leave a nice permanent reminder of what he did to her.

Of course it couldn't be regular water. It would need to be some mixture with an exceptionally low freeze point, far lower than 0 degrees Celsius.

This is actually my suspicion!

The "bad thing" Yuri did that Joseph talks about, is Yuri's family breaking the original engagement off due to the "nameless spirit" thing. The original being with Yuri. Yuri blames himself for it and that would explain everything.
