It's not the first time I've seen an author depict a character in a way that leaves the reader with no sympathy for them, only to reveal their backstory in the next chapter. I always wonder, isn't there a better narrative approach to this? Instead of waiting for the backstory to fix a character's lack of appeal, why not build sympathy earlier on?

After chapter 21, I feel no sympathy for Ayami, and to be honest, I don't even care about her backstory anymore. Her character feels so unlikable in chapter 21, and the sudden attempt to make her sympathetic feels forced.

Wouldn't it have been more effective to give Ayami more 'screen time' beforehand, so the reader could understand her better? By showing her struggles, motivations, or even some redeeming qualities early on, the author could have created a foundation for empathy, building a deeper connection between the reader and the character. It just feels like a missed opportunity when the emotional payoff comes too late, making it hard for me to care about Ayami, no matter what her backstory reveals.

Thanks for the chapter!
It would've made the reveal in chapter 20 actually feel like a surprise, instead it made me say "who the f*ck are you"

I’m not against the tonal shifts or even sudden genre changes. But the way this manga handles those turns is random, amateurish and the payoff is simply not there. That girl came out of nowhere and the shift was so heavy handed that it feels like mangaka stitched two different stories together, because the plot is simply inconsistent and patchy. Nothing works including the shock value, because the only shock here that the author is being stupid just for the sake of it.

Titles like this make you appreciate truly talented authors though.

I do not dislike authors who inject some drama in their fluffy romcoms. These are stories, they NEED some conflict to drive the story forwards and be entertaining.
This just feels very, very clumsy. Ayame got named barely a few chapters ago (I believe it was 17, not going to bother to check) and now she's suddenly thrust into the spotlight as the "main antagonist", and this chapter dumps a shit ton of backstory to justify her.
First of all, really tired of a "villain's" background being dumped on the reader the chapter right after they commit the bad deed, feels like a really forced attempt at garnering sympathy when readers should have had a frame of reference to atleast begin to understand her actions before. Kind of the reason why Twist Villains are very hard to pull off, you need to build them up without giving away their intended role.
Secondly, goddamn the writing sucks now. Why are we being pulled into Ayamy's POV all of a sudden? Did we need to know this right now? Really reinforces the cheapness of begging for the reader's sympathy. We should've stuck with the FMC like the rest of the manga, as she slowly pieces together what the author is shoving down our throats in 2 chapters, maybe in a dramatic conversation between FMC and villain. Just, so very clumsy

Boys, am I seeing things? Why is there a tragedy tag there? Is one of them gonna dies now then? I know it’s not yom-sensei’s work but an adaptation from a novel but… why?

I don’t mind a little bit drama or even the most dramatical shit ever put on pen but, tragedy is not what I sign for ffs

People arguing about how reviewbombing the manga is wrong, about how the plot is not cheap. that's fine, it's genuine discussion
However seeing how 10 star ratings also went up, right in the middle of the controversy and considering at least a few old 10 stars turned into lower numbers genuinely strikes me as wrong
For all we know those are new readers that came right in the middle of a controversy and still went for a perfect 10? sounds like actual dishonest rates, 1's can be reactionary and unfair but any 10 stinks of person who loves to add more fuel into a wildfire
I think it's likely new readers who have not caught up yet.

I am seeing a lot of new reactions to some of my old comments in previous chaps today.

I am seeing their emotional progress across the chaps going roughly like this:

These short chapters are really not helping. Like they were fine up until the last chapter just because of how light and episodic everything was, but the tonal shift now is way too jarring.

Why should I care about this little prostitute? What's next? Heroin addiction? Child pregnancy? IDGAF about this bitch. This was a comedy manga with YOM's foot fetish all 19 chapters in, WTF is this shit now?

Finally some good twists, ngl the "comfy romcom" can only get so far before getting stale.

Yeah nah I'm putting this romcom turned trainwreck on hold until it ends and then I'll maybe check it based on the ending reactions lol.

FMC deserves better guy and bestfriend.

I couldn't care less about this series or Ayami honestly. At this point I'm just reading to see it go further and further downhill and to read the comments.

Ah, yes, the daddy issues bad girl, a classic, but doesn't always work out for all female characters.

This one is one of them.
