I agree if she was malicious about it I would hate her but the way I see it, Yami's kiss was a rash decision and not a deliberate attempt to hurt Hikari. It still sucks for HIkari but I don't think the series ever intended for Yami to be a villain as much as a tragic character.
That’s the issue, the series and what it presents are misaligned. The author is working overtime to try to salvage Yami’s character.

Also “rash decision” or not she still did it. It being spur of the moment doesn’t excuse her for it.

lol this reminds me of this webtoon called unordinary that has this same issue. The main cast did some actual shitty things and rather than acknowledge it, the author retconned it so that their actions weren't a big deal and artificially fixed things to pretend they redeemed themselves.

Also I agree that her rash decision still hurts people and I'm not trying to excuse it. I was just going over how I didn't find myself hating Yami even after the kiss.

Nope absolutely a betrayal. She made her bed when she ghosted him, found out her “best friend” is in love with him, told her nothing, and then kissed him. She’s a shitty friend and a shitty person.
Aren't you forgetting Yuu? Might I remind you that Yuu's the one who said he wanted to talk. It's one thing if he's moved on, but he didn't.

So.. does every main characters in this manga treat this girl better that she treats them? Like for real main heroine and boy (and possibly the other friends) treat this girl better than she treats them which is slightly maddening.

Also this girl is in love with self-destructing. Look, life is hard, that's a fact. But she is actually not doing anything to better herself or her situation. All she's telling us is that everything she's tries has failed and that's she's quitting. Like, girl, if what you're currently doing isn't working then try something else, stop with this starting and quitting bull crap you're not getting anywhere with that which why you're currently stuck in your current predicament.

I mean yeah, of course he wants to talk, she took his virginity, made him fall in love, then hard ghosted him. I’m sure he has a few questions before he can have closure. That kinda shit fucks a person up and she did it anyway and then cried “poor me” about it. She hurts people and then feels bad for herself. She’s beyond toxic.

Also I agree that her rash decision still hurts people and I'm not trying to excuse it. I was just going over how I didn't find myself hating Yami even after the kiss.
I can suffer a lot, my main issue is she’s clearly not shown to be even trying to better herself. She’s still being entirely self serving. I’m sure if her backstory was presented some other way it wouldn’t rub me so raw but I can’t mentally divorce my frustration with the writing from my frustration with Yami.

Mangaka gives us sad backstory, we still think she need to get the rope. Who the fuck repays the girl who took you out of your gloom and doom era with betrayal, also chop the dude's dick our not so MC girl (because really we haven't seen her for so long as a focal character) deservers and can get much better. :aquadrink:

He also knew what school she went to but never tried to get back in contact
Never thought about this, but like he knows Hikari is popular and well liked (it was one of his insecurities) so yeah he could have absolutely asked her about "Aya senpai" if it had been more important to him to track down Aya than to keep it from Hikari.

Granted, I don't think this makes him terrible - just that he maybe was more interested in moving on and getting back to status quo.

She’s still being entirely self serving. I’m sure if her backstory was presented some other way it wouldn’t rub me so raw but I can’t mentally divorce my frustration with the writing from my frustration with Yami.
I hear you - I have all the frustration w/ her wounded bird tragedy arc. She does start to open up and be slightly less self serving w/ Hikari - giving her real advice about getting the guy, dropping a bit of the cool girl aloofness - and like I think that this part of the arc may be basically the power of friendship where romance fails. It'd be the easy way to up the tragedy - she loses the friendship that's actually helped her heal b/c of a self-destructive romance.
