I read it as he was corrupted generations before (hence why Kaya was told to never enter the cave), but he managed to suppress it most of the time while she was around.

It would make sense, if the shift would come gradually, but it does not.

To be honest is the mangaka fault, the novel made clear how the land god became corrupted by existing for a long time and the ugly stuff he seen from humans and continuing to cleanse the land for them created a second personality that just wanted to smithe them, but the manga skipped the full explanation and made less of a summary about it, so it looks crappy.
The mediums in the area came to sacrifice as ways to satisfy his rage and give him back control, that worked, and the land god hated that it worked as he didn't want people to die for him.
Even this final part was done wrongly, in the novel the fight was extremely fast, with the land god going with extremely fast and powerful strikes from the start and MC recognizing the power as very high even in the other world, he did use the hero sword to put him down and affirmed how his body is too underveloped to use it for a long time, but I don't recall injuries from using it, the note was more that he can't use all its power or doing so for some time would cause aftereffects.
The worst part is how MC cleaved him in half, had a short talk and I think used some of his own power to make him stable, then called the MILF and her daughter so they could finally have some time together, he left the cave to give them privacy and after some minutes both returned, crying but thankful for the opportunity to finally be able to talk, instead here he disintegrated in seconds.

Lack of worship would make somewhat sense, but not the sudden shift from sane to insane in modern Japan, especially with the reasons given directly from the god himself.

what do you mean nothing? everything happened. he isnt evil because he isnt appreciated. he is evil because he is corrupted basically becoming a fallen god/evil spirit and is evil by nature. corrupted by negative emotions, human emotion from million of humans. in that city.

worship, faith and devotion. is the essence of a god. their power. power to resist corruption.
corruption rises, worship declines. its basic economy.

the reason why god isnt insane/bankrupt earlier is because of the lumpsum of faith. because of sacrifices.
in other terms he sold off his assets. and he has been selling them for a long time. while cost keep rising. and income keeps declining.

not the same though, the otherworld didnt simply not thank him, they exploit him after kidnapping him from his world.

tried to turn him in to a breeding horse. complains for not saving them faster or better.

meanwhile on the god turned evil spirit. the people literally kill themselves for him. though you shouldn't really take an 'artificial' evil spirit for their words.
his nature quite literally flipped. his reasons being so petty pretty much means he was treated good.

He did accumulate malice from the past such as Hiroshima bombing, and the suffering of Japan from natural world disaster, however in current modern times recently his malice capacity has reached it's limit. And even in everyday life people emitted malice through jealousy, arrogance, lazziness and this everyday malice that finally break the dam of malice he contained through centuries as he can no longer hold on. They did offer virgin sacrifice and it only delayed his rage for decades until MC handle it up.
