Back in the day, other than the 10 ft pole, you also had to carry around a bag of spikes and a hammer to basically drive a "door stop" in to the ground to keep the doors open or they would automatically close for some Gygaxian reason, sometimes trapping you in the room.

D stands for die or dice
1 is the amount of dice rolled
8 is the amount of sides on the dice

So for example, when playing Monopoly, you roll 2 six-sided dice to determine how far you move on your turn, meaning you roll 2d6 (though this terminology is rarely used outside of RPGs and wargaming).
