Waitaminute.. He just:
1) Split the party.
2) Got rid of a level 4 equivalent (that is, 4 hit dice) cleric-grade melee combatant.
As background, Fighters are better than Clerics, which are themselves better than Mages. Also note that our MC is only level 2.
3) Outright deceived his companion.
4) Never confirmed that he'd be able to buy her back for what he received / confirmed she wouldn't be chopped up for meat / sold to someone else / sacrificed to a greater tentacle god / etc.
Four) Got Rosinante's gender entirely wrong despite having the book.

If I were his DM, I'd be laughing evilly (yet secretly and silently) behind my Dungeon Master's screen, right about now. ^w^

D&D 3.5 says 100 pounds per spell level. D&D5e has a flat 500 pound limit.
However, you can only move vertically unless you have something to push/pull yourself along horizontally. Yet he's seen moving somewhat diagonally in the chapter. There's also no height limit in the spell unlike what's described here. So how broken it ends up being depends on whatever the author feels like, I guess.

From a campaign perspective why would you purposely gimp your party? The warhorse is stronger than both of them and if there were as many wolves as he claims then having a strong member even more-so. Why would you remove a valued member from the party like that? Literally no amount of magical gear will make up the loss of a strong party member.

Yes, the firepower of a tank will obliterate many troops but the sheer number and mobility will overrun the tank.

"But that's where the other 2 can cover for it", Yeah, let a Warhorse stomp out wolves who will probably sink their teeth and swing around on the horse so that a sorcerer/thief or a warrior can quickly remove it. Wolves are fast and they're in a pack of more than 5-6. You can easily overwhelm the horse with 3-4 of those wolves.

@abear The question mark there isn't mine. It's ripped straight from the raws. I believe it's supposed to denote how she says "Either of your feelings" but in reality Rocinante's feelings are very clearly not being understood. Also I wen with " the 2 of your" because I wanted to preserve when numerals were used. Saying 2 when the raw says 2 and two when it says 二 if that makes sense.
