@Meridis But the difference between any basic ideology like objectivism and an actual religion is the element that is unprovable. I can have faith that living by the principles of objectivism will lead to a prosperous and virtuous life, but I could prove whether I was right or wrong by the end.

But with religion, God's presence is unprovable. Heaven, Nirvana, Valhalla, it's all unprovable as long as you remain part of the material plane. And that's what makes it so important for people who are religious to zealously reaffirm that faith.

What this girl is doing is basically deciding whether she wants to vote for another political party for one election cycle. She is not upholding a religious belief.

I had the same thought, but I checked the raws for that page, and the katakana for the ability is literally "Heal on Hands". Maybe it's written that way in Japanese D&D?

@Aretheus

That's a characterization of belief which came about as an attempt to expand the scope of religions by reducing the requirements of their members to being accepting their deity as real and donating to religious authorities. Religions don't start out this way, and initially define belief in their doctrine as following a specific set of principles. Belief, in this story (and in D&D), is explained as following that definition, that the follower must follow the religious doctrine of the god, not merely acknowledge their existence (and would be punished if they defy it).

The short of it is: there's two different definitions of belief differentiated by the degree of which one follows a religious doctrine. The one your referring to is the common/easy one and the one the story is referring to is the more difficult one.

@Aretheus You either misread or misinterpreted my comment. People don't follow the Christian god without believing he exists. They follow him because they believe he exists, but that isn't what faith means. It's not like believing in Santa, it's like believing in an athletic team. Obviously you know that athlete exists either way, but having faith in them is just supporting their goals.

@_idiot @SuperRobotSolo It's still Lay on Hands in the Japanese version of the game. I kept Heal on Hands purely because the name made me giggle. I can reupload the chapter with a change if it bothers you at all. It wasn't my intention for it to be annoying.

For someone that worships a god that has one of its teachings being "to never cast aside those in need", she's pretty selfish.

@yerrrrrrrrrrr Thanks for the offer, but only do it if you actually want change it. Sure, it's annoying as someone who has played D&D a few years back, but I'm not splitting hairs over it.

And don't worry about the intention, normal people have thicker skin than that, myself included.

The reason the word faith is used for believing the Christian god exists is because you would necessarily trust the Christian god if he were real
I don't think I misread anything. You pretty clearly stated that you don't need to believe in God's existence to be Christian.

But my problem with your definition of religion is that I don't see the difference between that and a standard ideology. You just can't be religious about something that you know is real. Imagine if those Scientology folk said that you would get your planet before you died, it would never work. They have to promise you that you'll be rewarded after death so that it's unprovable.

@Meridis idk why you keep saying I don't think you need to act in accordance to religious belief to be religious. I believe you need to have faith in some unprovable system rewarding or punishing your behavior on Earth.

If you just don't eat pork, that does not make you Muslim. You need to believe that the Muslim God will punish you or at least be ashamed of you if you eat pork. That's where the line between religion and ideology is drawn.

@Anonime It relates to dicerolls. The number on the left of the D is the number of dice rolled, while the number on the right is the number of faces the dice have. 1D6 means rolling one 6-sided dice, resulting in a random number from 1 to 6. As another example, 3D4 would mean rolling three 4-sided dice, resulting in a random number from 3 to 12.

@Aretheus

And I'm saying that there is a stricter definition of belief and D&D + this story follows that definition, not the one your using. That's why there's a disconnect between how she's acting and how you expect her to. If you use the same definition as you, yeah, your right, she is overreacting and the existence of the gods are a matter of fact, not belief. However, the rules of this story are that you have to do more than just know that the god exists, you have to follow their rules to get their blessing and you lose it if you break them. Ever hear those stories about dumbass paladins in D&D that tried to go murder hobo on some orc npcs or something and were forced on a redemption quest to get their powers back? This is that sort of thing.

@Aretheus I said "you would trust him if you believed in him". How the fuck do you get "you don't have to believe in him to be Christian" out of that? Your analogy with religion doesn't make sense either. You're saying "you can't be religious about a real god" and then trying to use the lack of rewards from a fake god to prove that point. It's such a non sequitur. Go over your premises one by one and try to clearly connect them. I promise you it won't work.

I literally copy-pasted what you wrote and it's nothing like what you wrote here. "... if he were real." Please stop bullshitting me.

And you don't seem to be getting this whole faith thing through your head. Scientology works because people have faith that they will be rewarded for their loyalty after death. It literally doesn't matter whether the Scientology God is real or not, only that you can never prove it.

I also find it hilarious that you refer to the God of scientology as being fake as opposed to all the other religions that are definitely real. I mean, come on dude.

As such, you can't have faith about a God you know is provably real because it would be like having faith that your internet provider is real.
