@themanj I'd say he only wants to stay friends because he doesn't realize she wants more. He said he has to try not to look at her that way. That's implied interest in her physically alongside obvious interest in her seeing as she's his friend. She's in his strike zone and they get along, that's the goal man. But he's probably worried if he tried for anything more than friends it'd ruin the friendship when she turns him down. Look at his uncle's isekai memories too, dense male MC runs in the family.

as someone else already pointed out : in page 3 , the fantasy light-novel is The Familiar of Zero / Zero no Tsukaima . and what kind of normal kid will read a boring heavy-novel with walls of texts and complicated kanji words ?
