honestly at the first time I read this, I prefer Bakarina over Bertia
now it's the other way around
It's very true. Bakarina is a lovable black hole who unfortunately sucks all the individuality and vitality of her friends into the event horizon of her omni-harem, leaving only husks burning with comedic jealousy in the accretion disk. It's very fun the first time around but because the relationship dynamics must maintain a steady state of Bakarina-sexual, there's nowhere for it to go. It's particularly stark when you read the "Hard Mode" alt-timeline for Bakarina where characters actually get to keep their own interests and romances apart from Bakarina, it's a lot more interesting!

In many ways Jishou Akuyaku is Cecil's story more than Bertia's, which is important because Bertia is this borderline slapstick 4-koma slice-of-life idiot careening like a wrecking ball through Cecil's political thriller & other people's romance stories. It's a neat intersection that almost naturally generates engaging interaction between characters, and only gets better the closer their relationship becomes! In retrospect it's not really surprising that Bertia ends up having the last laugh over Bakarina.
