The author is doing this on purpose. The author is either inexperienced or trolling.

Anime is unrealistic, but for a reader to connect there must be some sort of realism presented. In a serious teen drama, what this manga story is trying to be, there's no way to go all the way from bursting emotional confession to "just kidding" then life goes back to normal in 2 frames.

I feel at this point the author is purposely repeating these stupid scenarios, because either he/she doesn't understand how romantic drama development progress works OR he/she really just like trolling.

So much complains about how the story is written, but I bet you continue to read anyways.

Pulling back isn't that strange (just the act itself, not the complete backstory of MC that he pulls back and is scared about everything), making "jokes" about liking someone in any form isn't uncommon.

This story is about the MC being like this, if the author would change it completly then the story would have been finished. Is the MC annoying in the choices the author writes it? Sure... but we keep reading this anyways. I'm not that bothered anymore cause i already expect this... so either stop reading.. or stop the whining every chapter. Its more annoying than this MC.

It's not just the MC being a cuck. This is just dragging on, but we are still 150 chapters short.

@Vverg
I'm here just to see the end of this.

Great, so the one development that could have led to the story finally progressing and the MC being less of an idiot was overwritten because the author wants to milk this shit some more. Not to mention the MC also pussying out on revealing the truth to his grandma or acting like his love life is in "hard mode" when he has like three extremely cute girls interested on him (one of whom outright told him she wants to be his girlfriend) whom he clearly doesn't deserve. There is also him still acting like a fucking creepy stalker.

If the author isn't a complete idiot, then I at least hope this arc helps MC realize that Mizuhara has a nasty side or something, because right now he seems to see her in a completely idealized way. I could even go as far as to claim that he only cares about her because she is an "S-tier girl" and that he doesn't care much about her as a person other than "she is nice or something" but I know that's my low opinion of the MC cloduing my judgement and he probably really loves her, he just needs to drop his worship of her and realize she is a normal girl.

It's a shame that the story is filled with such shit writing and such a shitty MC because I really feel it has potential (I would have dropped it otherwise), it's just that the author doesn't seem to know how to exploit it.

I think it's possibly that the author thinks this is what counts as "funny".

I don't think I've hardly ever seen an actually 'funny' character in Japanese anime, manga or light novels. As far as I can see, humor comes in two forms: The tsukkomi/boke (straight man/funny man) routine, or the "annoying friend" character. Which really aren't all that different, as the "funny man" just acts annoying and the "straight man" yells at him and/or hits him.

One of the better "funny" characters I've seen is in KonoSuba, but even that one is basically a constant straight man/funny man routine between Kazuma and his merry band of idiots. But even there, generally, relationships are stuck in something like the Garfield-esque comic purgatory where it took 38 years for Jon Arbuckle to get a girlfriend... basically everything is just a running gag, with little progress story-wise or relationship wise or character-wise.

So yeah, the most common way I see for the Japanese to insert "humor" into their work is to make characters annoying. That's why you get the obnoxious friend/s in rom-coms who always, without fail, ruins any romantic chances the MC actually has (they follow them on dates, they interrupt them right at the wrong moment, they walk into people's rooms without knocking, they say inappropriate things, they purposefully misconstrue things, etc). It's just shit story telling, in my opinion, but I guess people over there enjoy it or something?

This is how you can have a series like Nisekoi, which takes 25 volumes and 5 years for the main character to underwhelmingly confess to the girl everyone knew he liked, and was going to ultimately choose, way back in Volume 1.

And no, the story would not be over if the MC matured as a character. It would just signify the end of that "arc" so to speak. That's what it means to have character growth. They change over time. Character growth is not "MC is an unlikable asshole on every single page until the final chapter, when he confesses to the girl he likes and she says yes." But I can almost guarantee you that's exactly what this story will do.

Real character growth means the MC confronts this weakness, decides to change himself for the better (or worse) but ultimately the situation has a resolution. And then a new character arc takes place with NEW challenges (for example, he could decide to grow balls, tell Mizuhara he likes her, she says she likes him, and they start dating. Situation resolved! And then in the NEW arc, now that he's dating Mizuhara, this brings with it all sorts of new dramatic conflict -- for example, it gets out that she was his rental girlfriend, and now no one (including his Grandma, for example) believes she's his real girlfriend, in a clever reversal of his previous situation. Other conflict could be things related to her acting career and him trying not to be jealous, other guys trying to move in on Mizuhara, or maybe Mizuhara is actually much better as a rental girlfriend than a real girlfriend (like maybe she sucks at cooking, is a messy slob, an angry drunk, etc).

Basically, we've had an entire YEAR go by in the manga with ZERO development or progress, story-wise, in ANY WAY. Absolutely NOTHING of consequence has happened since the first few chapters.

Feel free to downplay 50 chapters to defend the author and storyline, but at least admit some of the complaints have merit while doing so. This far into the story at that emotional height, pulling back is very strange and making "jokes" is very unnatural when done like this.

The MC maturing a bit won't finish this story and I guarantee that can be extended while keeping the virgin/self-sabotaging gag rolling. It's just painfully obvious how the story is looping the same scenario in different ways. Kick a dog enough times, they bark/bite. I've been reading the same loop long enough and ,call it simple cause/effect, I'm barking. Woof Woof.

If this guy went into a brothel and spent a few grand he'd still leave a virgin.

It just occurred to me that his grandmother is all over social media and stuff. Chances are good she knows all about it already.
