using "them" means that the exact same text can be used for both parties.

putting "him/her" just looks clunky in a single speech bubble - "them" is elegant and still technically correct, and even relevant (given how contextually vague Japanese can be when it comes to pronoun usage).

Thank goodness the entire universe around them seems to be bent on converging their paths together, come what may and in (to?) spite their own rather timid ways of being.

Uni Student has it right at the end, I think. And however much it may be the stuff of stories that lives may weave others into them like this, it makes for quite compelling narration, and leaves you wanting to root for and cheer them on all the more.

If they get people more directly involved supporting them then this is definitely heading towards end game. If this goes past 6 volumes then they're kind of milking the series imho (unless they decide to go past the confession which is becoming more popular nowadays and I approve in that case). The pacing has been ramping up since they gave each other the gifts.
