I remember in the old WN times people hated with fervor the side stories, they only became bearable when they meet kumoko. They also didn't gave much deep to the story besides making how kumoko was seen from others perspective and even so later we get better examples of that

@ovdose, Zetsubouzanto In the WN at least she's confirmed to be solidly on the bigger side, so we might get to see a bit more of that later. However it was also frequently commented that her clothing choice masked her actual size quite a bit, so we also might not.

@ixsaz Eh I agree the side chapters were a bit lame, especially compared to the main story, but after reading the manga I'm starting to realize they gave more depth to the story than I was giving them credit for. There was a decent bit of world building going on in those chapters, even gave some information that was at least relevant in the main story. Also I would say the side story chapters actually become fairly good once they reach

the elf village, and arguably in their journey through the labyrinth on the way there too

and things actually get interesting. Part of that is the fact they connect with the main story there, but I think it's also just that the side story chapters have more going on at that point. My problem with them was always that the characters were dull and not much interesting was happening.

So, I finished the second light novel released in English. I can advise that it ends (relative to the story told in the manga) at the fire wyrm. I can also advise that we are missing an entire set of side stories from the light novel, however, having finished the second volume and having a suspicion I had from early in the first, I can understand why they might be skipping them for now...
Hint, I often HATE time skips.

No, real spoilers (I am unsure how to easily add the tag on a smart phone).
Anyway, if anyone wants to follow her journey via the light novel (or if scanlaters are unable to continue due to its release in the US) I would say about halfway through the third light novel (which isn't released yet). I would still suggest reading vol. 1 and 2 for the "side stories" though.

@Arictic: In the WN it wasn't even clear there were any timeskips for a while. It was quite the surprise that the stories weren't running in parallel.

I think they will be skipping the side stories and never coming back to them, because while all the perspective switching is nice in novel form, it's going to be slightly annoying in manga form. Especially since this releases like, monthly. Imagine Kumoko's story leaving off on a cliffhanger for a month, only to switch to some other character's perspective for a couple chapters. The hypothetical anime adaptation would suffer from the same issue, though to a lesser extent (since episodes come out weekly). An anime however, would have the issue of having a hard limit on the number of episodes per season, so the main story probably would end up stalling for quite a bit.

ALL of the side stories from the light/web novel are from 10+ years in the future from our standing. It makes it seem like the evebts are happening in tandem when they really are not. Through the first two novels (haven't read the webnovels yet) there are times they TRICK the reader into believing that it is one single timeline but by the end of the second light nov it becomes clewr this was not true when it is revealed that she has become the demon king/lord. (The, "wouldn't that be wicked?" When she is suggeeting giving her former class mate, the new hero, his older brother, the former hero's scarf made of her silk made this abundantly clear.
However, it doesn't make her evil yet. I believe she is going to fight against the administrators, but I am about as far as the manga due to the epic slow translations being done officially.

I believe that they could do the side stories, but I believe that if they do it will be when they become relevant in the timeline (i.e. they will take a break to do just the side stories for explanation purposes). I mean, if they leave them out completely then a lot of people are going to be really confused: where did all of these people come from? You mean there is another entire world outside of the Labyrinth? Etc. But that's just me
