Did you for some reason not read the last 5 chapters? Okaya has always been obsessed with kiri. And kiri is not gay, he is just extremely selfless. I agree that it undermines maria's motivation though.

I'd have to go back and reread the start, but I'm pretty sure he originally started getting bullied to save another kid, and was collecting evidence until he could expose them. So this "twist" directly contradicts the start of the story.

yeah first chapter gives the impression that he only recently stepped in as the bully target and that Okaya didn't care about him at all.
