But I as a person living in the so call civilized modern world agrees that the wannabe Hero has committed crimes worthy of being harshly punished for.

Even in the real world it is a crime to lie to authority figures to hide your crimes, to cause chaos and destruction while acting as a representative of a nation, to lead others into danger under false pretense, and then abandon them when your life is endangered due to your own incompetence.

At the very least such a person would be looking at a very long prison sentence and depending on the nations involved a very real possibility of execution.

Political influence might factor into the final judgment, but this dud doesn't seem to have any. So he is lucky to still have his head attached to his shoulders
I am not arguing that he isn't wrong here.
To compare to the modern world, I see him as the commander of a special forces unit. He lied to his superior about the status of his unit, and then took a mission which he was not capable of handling, as his team was not in a fit state. These are both crimes, and he would be court marshalled and thrown in prison for a decade or two for both.
His action on the world tree, while stupid, was not criminal. That would have cost him his job, but it's hard to argue that he should be executed for it.
So, no, he should not be executed for his actions. Just imprisoned.

P.S. How old is he? He doesn't look to be above his teens.

Depends on the severity of his crimes and whether or not the country he was charge in had a death penalty. Dereliction of duty for sure, lying to a superior officer is obvious, abandonment of a comrade is another, and I'm sure that using a teammate as bait to save his own life would be seen as attempted murder of some sort. And that is all before blowing up half of the world tree.

I very much so disagree. If some jumpedup jarhead had accepted the mission to disarm a bomb at the Vatican, and in their incompetence set off the bomb instead, i would very much so expect their nominal leaders to hand over the disavowed criminal in very short order. Even if their were family connections to consider, the government would only take long enough for the family to make sure the idiot did in fact disgrace themselves before disowning them.

There is no way to compare the differences. We have no concept for when a person comes of age, when a person mentally matures, or even how magic effects the aging process or mental development.

And this completely ignores the fact that this person has been training for combat for an undetermined ammount of time, and seen live combat for an equally unknown period as well.

To compare to the modern world.
Sorry for the double post, but I felt this needed it's own response.

I honestly feel you have a highly sheltered and truely distorted view of the world around you. We live in a society where world leaders regularly oppress their citizens and outright killed their political rivals(see Russia and North Korea). We also have fundamentalist religious zealots who oppress the female half of their population, and carry out public stonings for adultery(see nations of the middle east). And this is done in the open, or with only a very thin facade to handwave away their actions.

If you really wanted a deeper dive on the injustices of the world, you have to look no further the the travesty that is the rapper Pdiddy(spl), and his long history of human trafficking, drug abuse, and worse.

The world around you is not just, nor is it kind. This is not conspiracy theory, nor is it an attempt to gaslight you. You only need to turn on the news and have the horrors of our modern world slap you up side the head.

There are some people who argue that prisons are inhumane and should’ve been banned from the world already. They also say that prisons don’t stop someone from committing a crime (and I agree with that). BUT, a prison takes the criminal off the streets, preventing them from committing more crimes. If Alan and those other criminals with him had been locked up instead of just getting a "mark," it would’ve already stopped them from spreading this disease to sell fake medicine.

About the death penalty, I think it’s only acceptable when the crime someone committed is truly serious. In Alan’s case, I don’t think his crimes were severe enough to deserve that punishment.
Destroying the tree means the end of the world, right? That seems pretty serious to me not to mention the only reason he was there was because he lied to the king about still having his full party. Sounds like a killable offense.

I would argue his actions at the World Tree were criminal negligence, and on top of that he tried flee instead of reporting on his actions. Going based on your explanation that would be considered desertion during combat since they were being attacked, right?

Since this is a kingdom a large number of crimes against the Crown may be considered treason. They often were. This is why the US constitution is specific on the definition of Treason and what is required for a conviction in Article III Section 3.
