Not like the Violets hold any official post in the kingdom. They never mention working for the kingdom (such as ministries, or diplomat), so those business trips are for their own profit.Duke's household is still a Duke.
Its still only below the royal family, and if the head of that ducal family handles foreign trade, and might as well also be their official foreign diplomat.
And whatever trade policies the dumb nobles can cook means jack if they only trade with themselves, their bubble will collapse sooner or later unless they are fully more than self sufficient, cause the foreign market doesn't want to deal with them.
Any decent noble households that handles either grain or farm produce, mining and metalwork, crafts etc. that can capitalize on such a dumb local trade policy can take full monopoly of the kingdom's economy, wouldn't let past the the chance and definitely just do under the table deals for that sweet sweet tariffs.
And the Violets being the ones handling foreign affairs can double dip in it.
Anyway, my point is, they might have the title, but it’s not as rigid as military ranks.
In the end, they’re exchanging favours, and the Violets don’t have much friends in that regards.
Of course, there’s also the romanticisation of character being so amazing you can bargain with the world, but living in the society, there will be place where you stumble, or can’t do anything if nobody want to help. Unless you’re the type who have plot armour.
As for the nobles against merchants, it’s war of attrition to see who folds first.
It’s not like there’s a fair trade federal regulation there. Also unlike when supply chain are connected across the world, the countries are probably self-sufficient in most of the basic needs.
One noble wouldn’t be able to do much, but if we talk about a whole faction, and with not all of them being foolish cardboard evil noble character, there would be thing the merchant wants from them, even if just the right to pass through the territory rather than take a long detour. The nobles could also give preference to their rivals.
Well, it’s weighing their chips. The nobles need to know what strength they have they can use and the timing.
Right now, the Heinz are in difficult situation because likely their allies are taking distance, so they can’t rally support. Even though their family are marques.
The King also seems to be avoiding getting involved with aristocratic circle’s drama unless they ask for his opinion first (putting the nobles in position who begs for a favour, which they’d rather not); or it escalate into thing that really hurt the national interest. At least in this kind of story, the palace seems to be content with letting the peasants bear the damage at least until things became too obvious and there’s an excuse for central’s involvement.
It’s not like kingdom with all power centralised to an absolute monarchy, so there would still be trying to hit balance between the crown and the feudal lords.
