The root cause is the Church with their, 'oh yeah, your skill is mentioned in scripture as being important to God, but in real life it's shit and you should be treated as shit' like what happened to the slave girl. From what I've seen in the japanese raw,

The MC or Cyclo's sister voluntarily made herself as a slave by putting a magic seal behind her as a proof that she will never betray or hurt his brother.
