Explaining the (evidently) second main character is kind of important though.

We have Rama's backstory now we get his, otherwise we know much less about him.

Its not halting progression it's character focus/exploration/explanation which is still progression.

My prediction is the vampire knows the sword is fake, and wants to pass it off as real so that the next "hero" to use it will be easier to defeat. Why else would he so willingly tell them his plans? Because it's a win-win for him, he either replaces a priest and tells humans the sword is real, or the humans learn of his plan to "steal" the sword and think that what they're protecting has to be real.

If there is both a WN and a LN then the source is almost always the LN, not the WN. LNs are the breadwinners and what is marketed, hence it gets treated as the source material and main work. The WN gets treated as a rough draft that got made public.
