But for real, I think the author shot himself in the leg. Main issue is that it's not published in shoujo magazine instead. Initial response in Japan was good, but now it's worse than here on Mangadex.

Expectations from chapters 1-2 were different than the current product.
I’m almost positive the mangaka is a woman. In any case, I’m actually extremely curious about the Japanese reception. That matters far more than what is said here. I wouldn’t mind a few more details. I’d find it extremely interesting if Japanese audiences were having similar problems with it that we were.

I really don't think this was damage control? I think this was like. The plan. In the first place. Where's the jarring pivot?

it clearly was, it's just so well executed that it seems like it was the idea from the start
he was a playboy at first, and as I said before, I'm fairly certain a veteran editor came in and salvaged it
now look how innocent and harmless he looks, it's obvious character assassination

yea, it's possible I'm wrong and she did plan for a "psych/ gotcha"
but considering her inexperience, I'm inclined to doubt it

Here you can find japanese comments. One link leads to chapter 3 and other to chapter 4. (chapter 5 is not available on official site yet.) If you don't know japanese, I reccomend using auto-translation of whole page by right-clicking.

A lot of comments are criticism, which also get the most likes too. There are no hate or crude comments, those are getting filtered out, so overall they are better constructed than the ones we have here. They don't debate whether it's NTR either (some mention it tho). They just mainly adress the issue of them feeling that what happened with narrative feels out of place and it's annoying/upsetting to them.

Well, chapter 4 isn't as critical. But its't mainly because Vampire barely appreared there. There is some leftover stigma from previous chapter tho.

(Some of my favourites are hidden now RIP. It sucks because on their site if you report enough times, comments get automatically hidden. So fans have huge power over it. It's best to read during first day of publication.)

I present to you

Damage Control: The Chapter

it was a pretty good one as well, she flipped his initial playboy personality into "the harmless masochist"
my guess is that a veteran editor stepped in to salvage the situation (the problem chapter had the same response in Japan)
I'm surprised that there aren't more comments like this. It's really, really obvious with how far the author goes into assuring us that she has absolutely no interest in him whatsoever and is immune to his charm powers. I actually thought it was trying a bit too hard to undo the earlier chapter.

I like how this side character has 3 chapters dedicated to just him compared to protagonists 2
It's more like he had 2. Chapter 4 wasn't really about him but it's ending lead into the second chapter focused on him.

I really don't think this was damage control? I think this was like. The plan. In the first place. Where's the jarring pivot? All this shit follows from what was set up before. The themes with Genjin having difficulties being accepted; the build-up of Senga being a dickish playboy-type who actually is only after blood, all the jealousy and fangirling for him and the upset when he does not want to date, just eat; the way he knows Yutaka has a crush on Tsumiki; the way Tsumiki's amusement park arc already got resolved in Chapter Four, so what else would happen in this chapter?

Before one interprets this as a swerve meant to salvage this arc... One should rule out that this was always the plan with Senga? I really think the author just stayed course with his introductory arc as planned even after people reacted negatively Much More Than Expected.

I really hope this doesn't get canned because people hallucinated cucking in it. I don't really get the idea this is a swerve into shoujo either. Tsumiki is cool and popular! She does stuff! Yutaka wants friends and to find out what he really wants and authentically engage with other people. They're making more friends together and helping each other enjoy scenarios they couldn't before—Yutaka thought it would be miserable and Tsumiki had never ever been. That kind of thing was literally the premise of the manga??

I get it, I'd like to date Tsumiki too, I'm super gay for the adorable werewolf girl. But if you looked at this and thought it would just be romantic moments between the leads you were not reading the first chapter, and if you think touching on these themes means there will be no romantic focus, you're being very silly.
I mean I can understand why many had issues with chapter 3. Tho it does seem like perhaps some had an idea about what this story is, and aren't happy that it isn't what they thought it was. I do agree with you about the romance aspect not really being the focal point of this story so far. It's mainly SoL using the interactions of Humans and Monsters as the setting, with romance vibes sprinkled in.

I've also seen comments that this is damage control? While possible nobody has any good way of proving that atm.

I don't really see how this is character assassination? Already in chapter three we see his playboy act is to get blood, not romance—a girl slapped him for it. The jealousy of all the guys was established in chapter one. "Senga has no real friends" just kinda immediately falls out of that, no? Who were his friends, if all the numbers in his phone were just for meals?

He dropped the smug act because he got hurt, he already started putting it back on afterwards.

I'm not saying the author planned a gotcha or psych-out. I'm saying "Character is putting up a front but is actually vulnerable, and pitiful underneath the shitty attitude" is super common in fiction, because that's a super common thing in real life. I think the author just did that and it so happened people breathed fire out of their mouths in furious hatred of Senga instead of the intended "Man this guy's a dick".

You're just making shit up about the author and fabricating a "senior editor" to attribute the good writing to for like, no reason. It's weird, to me anyways. Oh well!

yea bro, I don't see it;
she is, like someone mentioned above, trying way too hard, almost breaking the fourth wall with the "THERE'S NOTHING HERE GUYS", obviously because of backlash;
also, it's not good writing to piss off your possible fanbase on your debut manga, but maybe that's just me

also the thing about the editor is conjecture, but I'm fairly certain, specially since tsukimi is nearly breaking the forth wall addressing the reader; seen it before as well

Btw, to what extent should we (readers) be bothered with love relationships in school stories? In this case the characters are basically teens from the modern day setting - can't say I'm that concerned with who fucks who
I mean there is a romance tag so I expect atleast shipping war or romance stuff.
