If i thinks deeply the list was candidat that can give her or her daughter a boy baby who in her mind, would be the "papa" reincarnation, so the mother actual body state are likely the result of multiple abortion of girl baby after the radioscan.

seems like a waste to kill him off rather than keeping him in the long run being 'responsible' to raise his kid, b/c otherwise they could've gotten sperm more easily from like a bank if not the mom being willing to find 'sugar daddies' for her or so but i imagine they picked him because of his personality/traits too rather than just genetics or so

Perhaps the previous husband was a failed attempt and he tried to leave. That could be the reason he met an unfortunate early demise.

let me guess, the daughter is the product of incest of the mom and her late father who is probably dead. And now the daughter trying to get impregnated by her step father and they believe the baby will be the reborn mom's dead father. Hence why the manga is called “Welcome Back, Papa”. The "papa" will be the baby between the daugher and the step father.
