I'm pretty sure 32 is middle aged. Once you finish learning, and get used to life as a working person, you're middle-aged.
Old age comes when you retire. so it's too early for MC to call himself old. Might be a translation issue.

Middle age starts at 40 and goes to 60.

Regardless 32 being an "old man" still sounds odd.
