He's not just any regular old yokai but the former god of this land before the snake took over. Since gods thrive on faith, my guess is making himself a kin of her granted him an anchor to real world without being directly worshipped. So what did he do with that bead thou? Did he modified it so Dara san is related to him? Yokai are quite different to humans so I bet there are certain requirements for them to reproduce.
You've also got Koma-inu, which are those lion dog statues you sometimes see around Buddhist temples and shrines. You've got Raijuu, which are some kind of manifestation of lightning. You've got spider yokais too, which can be good or bad depending on their lore. And let's not forget the cat yokais. We've got a budding Nekomata in this manga, after all. You've also got some related to the dead, which take odd appearances, like the Itsumade (Thanks, Shin Megami Ten).
There are actually quite a lot of creature myths in Japan. To name some of the more famous ones you have evil foxes like Tamamo-No-Mae, good foxes like Kuzunoha and Inari-Okami (who is a god but foxes are consider their messanger), crows like the Karasu-Tengu and Yatagarsu, Kappa can be likened to turtles. In stories dogs are usually likened to good omens and fortune like with the Old Man and the Cherry tree. Birds are also a common one such as the Tongue Cut Sparrow and the Crane Returns a favor. Even a story about a Clam turning into a woman.
Japans "8 Million Kami" means that basically any and everything can be a god or demon, and often it comes down to local legends.
Omukade was specifically a monster centipede that could wrap around mountains, and was defeated by Fujiwara no Hidesato/Tawara Touta after he covered his arrow in spit, as for some odd reason it saliva could bypass its armor.
For snakes the most famous is the Yamata no Orochi, who was slain by Susanoo after getting it drunk, Nure-onna which are snakes with the head of women, and while not directly a snake Kiyohime turned into one to chase down Anchin.
Foxe's, Weasels, Raccoon dogs, And there used to be legends about the Japanese wolf before they went extinct.
I was wondering about this too but yes, the artbook explicitly uses "he"."his"?![]()
Their souls joined the youkai paradeAren't they very dead?
There's also Komainu (lion dogs) and a couple of related variations (that seem to be based on statues from china originally) which you'll often see as statues at shrines, etc. and are also the basis of Left and Right from Yomi no Tsugai (which everyone should read, it's by the author of FMA and it's so good!)So is Ryukan a centipede yokai like Mr. Snek is, obviously, a snake yokai? I wonder if there are any other animals in Japan that are famous spiritually like that. I know crows = tengu, there are spider ladies, and of course snake gods, but are there others I'm forgetting?
keep the clothes on and it won't matter"his"?![]()
There are Sacred White Dog messengers and Hell Hounds, but ultimately Shiba Inu is just a modern label for a generic type of Japanese dog, and dogs as dogs are just dogs. Same as with cats, there isn't really a specific breed of sacred cat entity there's just Spirit Cats. There is never a shiba inu yokai![]()
Nah, I meant one giant fluffy boi with a dopey face and wagging his curly tail being a guardian of a mountain and he lies in the valley. It's always a giant snake or bug being very scary.
All thanks to "Hozuki's Cool Headedness" for that lore.
they are in the hundred marching parade, with the sorcerer, in the underworld, but who know if they will reappear in the future.Aren't they very dead?
Since Yokai and land god seems can be interchangeable in this series base on circumstances, does that mean Kaoru in the end gave his name to one? Has Ryukan appeared before? I can't really recall
岳越九十八, Nitarazu has the 十 character like the other branches, the characters 九十八 can mean 98, I wonder if its a reference to his remaining legs since he gave Nagi one for the pill. For Japanese speakers: what is the wordplay or hints given by the name "Takegose Nitarazu"?
So in other words he gave another one of his legs to someone else!隆酣 Ryukan, What a name. I hope his lore gets expanded on, this is too cool to be a one off.

Also, I can't get over the fact that the centipede is the one who took on the 9th lineage so his branch name would use the "hundred" character.
I love the wordplay in this series.
Verily.Aren't they very dead?
kaoru also calls it out on page 19, and he'd know about recognizing another effeminate-looking manI was wondering about this too but yes, the artbook explicitly uses "he".

This page makes it a little clearer IMO, he has long hair but the shape of his face and jawline are pretty masculine.
Not just dragons. Apparently it also preys on giant serpents. So those were antennae, not horns! Dude was an Ōmukade, huh. Pretty much a giant centipede that eats dragons. Fitting for them to be named "dragon feast".
