Firebricks are made from the clay in coal mines. If he knows about the co-prime cogs, this knowledge should be even more basic.
Never mind that "I'm getting isekai'd to a world that has tech somewhere between antiquity & low middle ages" is the reason he brought an A/C & Generator. How hard would it'd've been to, at the laziest, download wikipedia into a couple of hard drives, and take out every single line of credit under the sun & use them to buy cubic zirconia in bulk. Along with maybe bringing some of them high-yield crops we created after the green revolution, what with "massive loss of fighting age men" also meaning "massive loss manual labor", so it'd be nice if he'd thought to bring a suitcase's worth of potatoes, and another of maybe wheat, corn, and rice.
Because, for real, ancient crops were tiny.
