"Louver would contact other fortune tellers if something happened to her. But there was nothing"
Meaning the fortune tellers never received anything from Louver, so at first it seemed like nothing was wrong.
"Some villagers questioned a follower and found out the truth. Apparently he tried to convince people it was children's fault, and expelled parentless children"
So back in the beginning, we knew the truth that the fortune teller died from illness supposedly and the village chief had medicine but wouldn't give her.
Because our main character was a starless, it was the perfect excuse to say she brought misfortune thus causing the fortune teller's death, but based on this sentence, the village chief didn't just stop with MC. He might say that any child that didn't have parents was a bad omen and horrible for the village and expel them.
Based on the hearsay that the guards and all said in the previous chapter, it looks like the village isn't doing well and is sending off children for less mouths to feed.
And yeah I agree that using the word "orphan" would be easier lol! Hopefully this makes sense!
