That seems kind of weird, since it also implies kids can speak from birth. Or at least understand speech.

Cultural thing perhaps. People on Earth have better lines of communication, so learning languages from other places isn't as hard. But even the Japanese had considerable difficulty learning English as recently as mid-twentieth century; case in point being their declaration of war which arrived late. Here, the beast people are treated as menial laborers, and until the MC, were treated as among the lowest of the low by humans, so most probably wouldn't even bother to try learning.
In Tsukimichi the babies can speak from birth if the Goddess favors them with a speech blessing early. Maybe it's the same here?

Lacking lines of communication isn't it, since they're talking about long journeys and a specific person. It might be true for the general populace, but not individuals.
He didn't treat them that lowly, so that's also not a thing, or they'd have thought he was part beastman when he did treat them well. If anything, the equal treatment would make it more likely he'd bother learning the language.
If that's the case, you'd have to have sufficient genetics to be able to speak properly, and that would most likely be visible.

It's cultural, related to ancestor reverence. Shinto/Buddhist tradition holds that your ancestors become spirits who can meddle in your life. If you treat them with respect they will watch over you. Especially talented ancestors, like a famous general or scholar, give powerful protection. For example a rich family can say of their generational wealth "We're of good stock because of our great ancestors." Or conversely "Those poor people must be scum from a bad family because their ancestors aren't blessing them."
I'm like 90% sure this ends when the kidnapping arc ends. People he's helped are returning that favor now, and once he gets back to Clara and she kicks the shit out of Juliana, where else would the story go? He's got a happy marriage now
